Patong? Or another resort

Hi we are a couple late 40s, was really looking forward to coming to Patong in February for 9 nights, but one of the guys at work has put me off a bit saying that it's very busy, stinks of sewerage and very expensive. Albeit he's a single guy and was frequenting the bars looking for fun, he was saying after 4 days he had had enough for the above reasons and it's same thing different day. I know people have different opinions but this has now got us having second thoughts as to wether Patong is really the place for us or should we try another resort. We do like tho to be somewhere were there's something happening rather than a quiet resort. Any advice or opinions would be grateful from Patong regulars or experts and even people who may have had similar concerns.

Hi Stevo...Your mate has his opinions and rightly so..It's his privelege....However,you have to ask why so many, thousands of tourists keep returning to Patong...Be they singles, couples and families....

I have a friend who insists on staying at Patong Resort two months at a time...He is up to his seventh or maybe it's eighth...??...And on his own...

I have stayed in Patong 3 times and will return one day,and maybe stay at Kata for a change....

I'd say to you...Go...and make up your own mind....Remember the old saying...."You'll never ever know if you never ever go...!!"....

I can guarantee that Patong/Phuket would be cheaper than UK in a lot of respects....

Sorry...Forgot to mention another resort....If you want party time and people watching then Patong is the go....

If you want quiet and a wonderful holiday....Try Khao Lak...1 1/2 hours drive north of Phuket airport....

Wonderful area of Thailand and truly my choice....

So there’s a bit of a whiff sometimes as you walk along the footpath. Not like smelling the roses for sure but its not often, it doesn’t last long and its not life threatening. As for expensive – compared with what ? . Compared to home its as cheap as chips.

Once you get there you won’t even notice the minor negatives.

I don't know about that Andy . I knew a bar girl that wouldn't let me stomp a cockroach. Because it could be one of her ancestors....? You gotta love a Buddhist.

Thank you for all of you that replied, I think that it's true if we don't go we will never know. We are going to try and get a hotel a little out of the centre then we aren't right on top of it so we can take it as we want it.

We have our heart set on trying it, so thanks for all your advice

If you haven't already booked a hotel in Patong you could consider Karon which is just over the hill and has a nicer beach or Kata which is just further and is smaller with even nicer beach. You can commute into Patong from either if you want to sample it, particularly it's night life and better shopping.

Phuket is a little bit more expensive than other popular destinations in Thailand, but still cheap by UK standards. One of the big differences to the rest of Thailand is the tuk tuk / taxi prices are much higher than then rest of Thailand. If you stay outside of town in Patong expect to pay 200Bt to get to a central point - again by UK terms it's not much but more expensive than other areas in Thailand.

February will still be high season but it's away from the peak time of Xmas and New year so Patong should not be crazy but will still be lively. There'll be quite a few people on the beach but you won't be packed in like sardines (like happens in many European resorts) and the sea is very inviting! If you want somewhere a bit less busy consider Karon beach to the south, it'd cost you about 300Bt to get a tuk tuk in to Patong if you want more shopping, nightlife and choice of restaurants etc.

For couples I'd recomend you check out Cocktails & Dreams (#1 Nightlife spot in Phuket) - it's just off Bangla Road but it's not "in your face" like the beers bars on Bangla itself.

If Phuket you could look at Karon or Kata if Patong was not the sort of place for you.

Transport though is expensive compared to many other places in Thailand.

But Thailand has countless beaches and islands that vary a great deal so it does ciome down to what you are seeking. February is one of thebest months for weather pretty much all over the beaches / islands and there are lots of choices.

Also depends how busy crowded nightlife you wanted, whether shopping and malls important, euro food, pubs etc, if you want lots of nightlife etc then Patong may suit, there are hotels and accommodations away from the busiest areas but still busy.

Some want just some restaurants and beach bars and that is enough for nightlife, in that case opens up so many beaches / islands.

You must hae a 'picture' from your dream of Thailand ? :) Tell us your ideal picture and that helps to see what you are looking for

If Andy or someone else can post some of those video links they have it gives the OP a better picture.
