Northern Thailand-itinerary

Thanks to this forum, we have obtained a great guide. Now...after 4 days in Chiang Mai, we fly to MHS, staying 2 nights at Fern Resort. Then we have 2 nights reserved at Soppong River Inn and then, a blank night and 4 nights in Chiang Rai, flying out early that morning to Bangkok for 3 nights and then, to Singapore for 4 nights. So, we have 9 days starting in MHS and ending in CR, with a guide booked for 7-8 days, starting in MHS. Staying in Chiang Dao for that night in the middle - is that a good idea? Another thought--should we cut off the first day in Chiang Rai and stay in Mae Salong?

You didn't say when you were planning to stay in Chiang Dao, but that would break up the 7-8 hour drive to Chiang Rai, if you take the route that passes through Fang and Thaton. Chiang Dao would be about 20 miles in the direction of Thaton when you turn left from Hwy 195 onto Hwy 107. Actually, Thaton might be a more interesting place to break up the drive to Chiang Rai, with its nice riverside location.

You will probably find that four nights in Chiang Rai will be more than enough, and a stopover in Mae Salong would be interesting. Mae Salong has an interesting KMT Chinese culture, together with Akha and Lisu hilltribes, and it's really lovely perched high up on top of a mountain. You didn't say when you would be going, but it can get very cool indeed there during the winter months. From Thaton, you could drive down the mountain in the direction of Mae Chan, then turn south to Chiang Rai city.

Hi,

I would agree with the above, both Tha ton and Mae Salong are well worth an overnight stop.

Cheers

Thanks, so much. We are thinking of 2 nights Fern Resort Mae Hong Son, 2 nights Soppong River Resort, 1 night somewhere in Chiang Dao, 1 night somewhere in Mae Salong and 3 nights in Chiang Rai. Baan Sontree. Thoughts? We have a guide and driver for that time period.
