Best Way to Beach Hop SE Asia?

We would like to beach-hop Southeast Asia for our honeymoon in Oct. Need recs on transport (plane, train, bus, or rental car?) and which beaches/islands are worthwhile for the travel time.

Roughly the plan is SF,USA to Singapore to (Kuantan or Tioman), to (Langkawi and/or Krabi or Phi Phi Don) to (Palawan or Boracay). Staying 2-6 days at each for total of 18 days.

Accom recs always helpful too. Looking for cheap (will be broke after wedding!) but no bugs, rats, or TP-wads in bathroom!

Thanks in advance!!

Was going to recommend chartering a luxury crewed sailboat until I noted the word "cheap" :)

For a quick overview of "air pass" options which may allow you to go to even more beach destinations if that is your goal, see:

http://www.airtimetable.com/airpass_asia.htm

Once you have figured out the cost of travel with Cathay Pacific or Malaysian Airlines, you can then look into what prices you can obtain by building your own flight segments through discount fares to get you across the Pacific, and then local discount carriers (Air Asia, Tiger Airways, etc.) once you are there and see how prices compare.

Plane is the way to go still if you are looking for cheap transport and spending most of your time at (as opposed to getting to) your destinations. Otherwise, local buses will be cheapest, longest, most adventurous, most uncomfortable, and most dangerous.

Beach vacations and car rentals don't usual make sense together.

Singapore public transit is fabulous and cheap (post for info. in the Singapore forum or use the search function with the key words "taxi" "bus" and "hop-on").

Other destinations, taxis are cheap and plentiful.

Transit from airports for your named destinations generally is best by taxi.

My "Cheap" but nice honeymoon accomodations for you:

Singapore - The Strand Hotel, or City Bayview (location, not beach)

Krabi/Ao Nang - Somkiet Buri

Others will have other suggestions.

BTW, for honeymoon and cheap, have you considered adding Bali to your list? Ubud, Bali is not known for its beaches (none) but it is quite beautiful and many accomodations come with fabulous pools (see www.ulunubud.com for cheap but nice).

Most of the major islands will have ferrys - so it is possible to take a car up and down the coastline of Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

But . . . if cheap is the plan - buses are by far the cheapest.

As you are planning to cover a large amount of territory - flying via the local discount carriers is probably your best bet.

Just my opinion - but with only 18 days it might be worth just hitting one or two places - you will find you'll spend most of your time on buses, ferries, in airports and traveling rather than relaxing and enjoying your honeymoon.

Also, if you limited your traveling a little bit you might be able to upgrade your accommodation a bit and enjoy yourself even more.

Another option might be to base yourself in a place like Phuket where you can day trip inexpensively out to Phi Phi, Krabi, Khao Lak, etc.

Take a look at www.PhuketDelight.com for information on the area there and/or www.KhaoLakLovers.com for that area.

Favorite beaches? PakWeeb in Khao Lak, NaiThon on Phuket.
