Remember you cannot own the land. My tip would be if you plan to retire there to rent a house first so you can really get to know the ins and outs of the place. You will get to know far more that way.

You CAN own the land - as long as you set yourself up as a limited company. It's quite simple.

However if you're going to Khon Kaen, you must have a reason, so you probably have a girlfriend or wife and can put it in her name (the normal way to do it).

I have a large house on the Khon Kaen side of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Khon Kaen is nice, but as already suggested it may be worth you renting a condo (not expensive) for a year or so rather than rushing in.

Obviously if you have a local girlfriend she will probably know exactly where she wants to be - her village near her friends and family - but does this suit you?

If you can live with no foreigners for extended lengths of time with the conversation from catching bugs/frogs the night before, to inspiring subjects like the price of rice - OK.

I'm lucky, I spend the weeks in Bangkok and come up here for weekends.

Choose a location where you can get into town easily. Go to Thaivisa dot com - the local forum for Khon Kaen will give you all the advice you need (and some more........).

Check your location and see if there are other foreigners around, and that they actually speak ENGLISH.

Go out for drinks with them and get to know the local area.

The price of land varies depending on location, so you'll have to check that out.

Building houses is more expensive every year, and most book shops here have some hard-backed books on the top shelf showing different designs, together with approx. costs.

Builders here don't usually follow plans too closely so don't spend a fortune on architects - and keep a close eye on what they're doing during the building process!!!!

As a guideline for a 2 bedroom job in brick, I would say a bungalow would be slightly over a million Baht, and a 2 storey jobbie less than 2 million.

Hope this helps.
