Kanchanaburi tour too much in 2 days?

We are thinking of booking a tour from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi . It's a 2 day tour. First day includes drive from Bangkok ,War Museum Bridge .War cemetry and ride on death railway. Lunch . Hellfire Pass and stop at Sai Yok waterfall return to overnight accommodation. Next day is elephant camp/ride and return to Bangkok by 4pm. I feel we will be rushing through all the historical sites on the first day and not sure we really need to do the elephants as we will be taking the train to Chiang Mai as well. Any views on better itinerary?

Hi Anne,

To see/experience the Hellfire Pass museum and trail you need at least 3 hours. Day 1 is long, I don't think you will have much time to see all of the places you mention.

You could hire a car+driver from Bangkok to take you to some of the places. However, since you have allocated 2 days I would advise staying in Kanchanaburi as originally planned and organizing something from there. Again, you could hire a car+driver or join a larger tour. There are many travel agents/offices in Kanchanaburi which can arrange this. Moreover, it will be a shame not to experience some of the natural beauty of the area. There are a number of waterfalls that you could visit, the Erawan being the most well known.

Andy.

Agree with Andy, too much time travelling, and nowhere near long enough enjoying what you've done all that travelling to see.

Three days/two nights minimum. Don't bother with the elephants if you're going up north.

Kanchanaburi and west of it is beautiful, with so much history. It deserves to be enjoyed at leisure!

Hi Anne,

Before I respond to your question please do tell me how you plan to travel. Will you be using public transport or hiring a driver + car ?

Cheers, Andy.

Hi Andy,

I was not keen to use public transport as we are on a strict time schedule to be back in Bangkok to catch the overnight train to Chiang Mai

Hi Anne,

If you have your own driver it is possible but do note that both the Erawan Falls and the Hellfire Pass close at 16.00. Alternatively, you could visit the Hellfire Pass and then do the short drive north and visit Sai Yok National Park which is also a beautiful place to visit.

You'll regret not spending longer in the area.

Be careful of all those two and four strokes in Chiang Mai!

Hi Anne,

1. Bangkok to Erawan falls- lunch- to hellfire pass then to Kanchanaburi overnight.

Yes it could be possible, by private car + driver that knows the way, only if you leave at say 6.00 - 7.00 am in the morning for Bangkok, getting to Kan round 10-ish.

Erawan falls are 70 kms from the town, so yes, lunch time and a quick walk up to the falls and then across country to Hellfire pass before it closes.

By the way, there are only 2 main roads up, one the 323 to Hell Fire pass and the other is 3199 to Erawan Waterfalls

Please see the map of Kan

Hope this hepls you all.
