Driver in Chiang Rai and markets..

We will be spending 3 or 4 days in Chiang Rai in Feb, is it more advisable to hire a driver and get shown around a few of the sights and if so any recommendations? There is just 2 of us travelling and we will be travelling on a budget.

Are there night markets there (not Saturday as we wont be there on a Saturday), If so, are they as large as the Chiang Mai ones?

Dear 40again,

First can I say how lovely you look in your photo :-)

There is a night market every night at the Night Bazaar behind the old bus station, and also the food stalls there are worth a visit and a beer. There is a Sunday night market, it's 1km SE of town, a tuk-tuk or taxi cold take you there, or you can walk depending which hotel you're in.

Hiring a driver will let you see a lot more, particularly if you head to the further away places like Doi Maesalong, the Royal Villa, the Golden Triangle etc. If your budget is tight, you could see the Elephant Camp via long-tailed boat, the White Temple & Black House by tuk-tuk or taxi.

I am sure you will get lots of other suggestions from forum regulars too.

Bruce

Hi 40 Again:

I think you would be able to see more of the area if you hired a driver or a guide, especially if you want to visit some of the areas outside of Chiang Rai. Most travelers to Chiang Rai venture out an hour or two to the east, north or west, to places such as Mae Salong, the Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen, Chiang Khong etc. If you desire to visit hilltribes you will need to get outside of town. A guide is not that much more expensive than a driver so you may wish to consider that option, as a guide will speak English and most drivers in Chiang Rai do not speak English well. The FAQ on Costs for Tours in the upper right hand corner has a price chart for different tours if you use a driver and if you use a guide. If that is too expensive for your budget you could consider a group tour or taking a local bus.

The night market is not nearly as large as the Chiang Mai night market (except for the Saturday Walking Market, but you won't be in Chiang Rai on a Saturday), but it is very enjoyable and the vendors are very friendly. The Sunday market is pretty small and very local and is a nice place to visit if you want a view of more local life.

Safe Travels,

Broder
