Broder's Cost Chart Re: Chiang Rai area tours/sites

Hi all:

I receive a lot of p.m.s and questions regarding the reasonable cost of certain tours in the Chiang Rai area, as well as inquiries on the cost of certain tourist sites. I thought I'd compile the cost of what we paid in late June/early July 2012 so that others could benefit in planning their trips. These costs may vary depending on the guide or driver you use. These were current during our last trip for an experienced guide with excellent English.

Guide for a day: 700 to 800 baht per day for guide only.

Driver for a day (non or limited English speaking generally): 300 baht per day.

Day trip from Chiang Rai to Doi Tung: full day trip = 2,800 baht if you have a separate guide and a driver; 2,500 baht if your guide is also the driver. This is for a van so the cost is the same whether you have two people or six people.

Day trip from Chiang Rai to Golden Triangle: full day trip = 2,900 baht if you have a separate guide and a driver; 2,600 baht if your guide is also the driver. This is for a van so the cost is the same whether you have two people or six people.

Day trip from Chiang Rai to Mae Sai (which is the Thailand side of the Burma border crossing): full day trip = 2,800 baht if you have a separate guide and a driver; 2,500 baht if your guide is also the driver. This is for a van so the cost is the same whether you have two people or six people.

Day trip from Chiang Rai to Chiang Saen: full day trip = 2,900 baht if you have a separate guide and a driver; 2,500 baht if your guide is also the driver. This is for a van so the cost is the same whether you have two people or six people.

Day or overnight trip from Chiang Rai to Mae Salong: 2,900 baht if you have a separate guide and driver; 2,600 baht if your guide is also the driver. This is for a van so the cost is the same whether you have two people or six people. If you stay at a hotel that does not provide a room for a guide (many do) then the cost for the guide/driver's room would be added to this.

A trip from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai: 2,600 to 3,000 baht. The lower price is generally if you are hiring a Chiang Rai guide and you ask him or her to come pick you up in Chiang Mai or are asking him/her to return you to Chiang Mai.

Long tail boat ride from Chiang Rai to Ruammit = one way 600 to 700 baht; round trip is 700 baht (as the boat has to go back anyway). 50 baht tip recommended. Eight people can fit in the boat, including the boat driver.

Elephant ride in Ruammit = 500 baht for one hour; 600 baht for 1.5 hour through the jungle.

Raft trip down the MeKok (includes pick up and return to Chiang Rai hotel, water, wet towels, lunch cooked on the raft, fruit, drinks, soft drinks, the 2 boat men, trucks and drivers to launch the raft, the guide and a cook/assistant): 2 people @ 2,500 baht each (5,000 baht total);

3 people @ 1,800 baht each

4 people @ 1,400 baht each

White Temple: Free

Black Artist Compound: Free

Opium Museum In Sob Ruak – 50 baht.

Hall of Opium in Sob Ruak – 200 baht

Long tail boat at the Golden Triangle from Sob Ruak to Chiang Saen: 600 baht w/dock fees per boat. Boat holds six people, including the driver.

Large boat at the Golden Triangle from Sob Ruak to Chiang Saen: 1,500 baht per boat and it seats 10 (this has a cover to protect from the sun).

Dock fees if your boat from the Golden Triangle stops at the Island in Laos: 20 baht for each person.

Burma border crossing: 500 baht. As of July 2012 the border crossing guards indicated they will no longer accept 10 USD but they have went back and forth on that over the years.

Doi Tung (Mae Fah Gardens): 90 baht to visit the King’s Mother’s villa; 90 baht for the garden; 50 baht for Inspiration Hall (half price if you have a student ID or are 60 years and older).

Hope this is helpful in your planning,

Broder

Heberance.... Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Mae Salong areas are all wonderful and if you look up each name as a travel forum, ie: Chiang Mai Travel Forum (Trip Advisor), and check out the JBRs in the top right corner of the home page under FAQs, (JBR stands for "Just Back Report"), you will get lots of information and ideas of what to see and do by reading reports from other peoples' travels in these areas.

The north can sometimes be overlooked but for me, it has been a wonderful experience to travel there.

Ask lots of questions in the each of the forums of areas you are interested in travelling to, and you will get lots of good advice and help.

Thanks Broder

Great post. I am helping a friend plan a trip to Chaing Rai and north for about 5 days, and unfortunately, Jermsak is busy during their dates. We were fortunate to have his services during our trip in 09. So, these prices are a good beginning for them.

Good luck in planning your trip's friend Rosemary. Let us know if you need suggestions for other guides. Sorry Jermsak isn't available for your friends. As you probably know, the FAQ on the upper right hand side of this forum page has contact information for guides.

Safe Travels,

Hi

Sorry if this appears stupid but what's the difference between hiring a driver for a day (300bht) and paying for a tour (2500)

Thanks

You won't get a driver for 300 baht for a day, I think that is a mistake.

That's what I thought lol. So we are looking around 2500 for a driver/guide for a day.

Kerrie:

It is certainly not a stupid question, as this can be confusing, but the 300 baht for a drive is not a mistake

People usually do their tours in one of three ways (though other means are possible).

1. They hire a van/car with a driver only – no guide.

2. They hire a van/car with a guide who does the driving – no separate driver.

3. They hire a van/car with a guide and a driver.

I have done all three.

The third option can be really nice if you have a group of 5 or 6 people and you want the guide to be able to turn around in the van and talk to you, answer questions, explain the area you are driving through. It is also handy when you are being dropped off at places like the White Temple, the Burma border at Mae Sai or Doi Tung, and the driver goes to park and stay with the car while the guide goes with you.

If you hire a guide and also have a driver, as in option 3, the additional cost is 300 baht per day, as the driver is paid 300 baht per day. So a full day tour from Chiang Rai to Doi Tung is 2800 baht if you have a guide and a driver.

If you use option number 2 above, where the guide is the driver, your cost is 300 baht less than option 3. So a full day tour from Chiang Rai to Doi Tung is 2500 baht if your guide also acts as the driver.

If you option number 1 above, the cost would be about 2300 baht, as your cost would include paying 300 baht for the driver but not the 800 baht for a guide.

The base price for the van and fuel would be 2,000 baht in the above scenarios.

It sounds a bit confusing but this type of breakdown often helps people compare apples to apples when they are obtaining quotes.

Hope that helps,

Broder

Makes much more sence now. Was wondering how a driver and vehicle was 300 but now understand this is for just the driver and you pay for the vehicle separate.

Thanks
