We transfer at Bangkok to fly into chiang rai! Have a Citibank debit card, can you find ATM easily? Can taxi driver take us dollars if I can not get cash out at airport?
There are ATMs at airports. There are exchanges at airport also. Doubt taxi driver will take $s.
Yes. ATM's are very easy to find.
(Better rates in town vs at the airport in CR.)
Just as Sydney taxi drivers probably take dollars, Thai taxi drivers deal in baht.
There is a bus from the airport as well, 20 baht I think it was.
No problem to find an ATM.
NO, the taxi driver will take only THB.
SuperRich have 2 branches in CR, one is near the central bus station.
just in case I would have a few aust $ that could be changed if the ATMs are out of action or the bank decides to play silly buggers
If you are planning on using a single debit card for all of your spending money this could be a problem. You can lose or damage a single card. So have back up cards.
* A credit card or two can come in handy for emergencies. Also look into some sort of travel medical-hospital insurance.
You can bring AU dollars and change it in Thailand. When you bring cash choose newer printings, no writing or stains on the bills. Stick with the larger denominations so you don't need a bag to carry all the cash in. (When you fly home you can change leftover Thai money to your home currency at the airport.)
There is a fee to use an ATM so read up on how to do it properly. The fee is the same for a token amount or the maximum your bank and the ATM allows.
For most cheap purchases in Thailand you will be using Thai baht and not flashing a card for every paltry purchase.

It makes no difference where the ATM is, airport or city center, exchange rates for foreign withdrawals are determined by your bank at home (unless you are foolish enough to accept the "charge in USD" option).
