Cha-am holiday in July

My family (couple with 6 year old), are going to Thailand in July 2012 & are thinking of holidaying in Cha-am. We like the idea of a laid-back seaside town but wonder if there will still be plenty of restaurants & convenience stores open in low season? Also, does Cha-am have any shops selling souvineers, beachwear, clothing, kids' pool toys, etc? What about street food - carts selling pancakes, noodles, etc? We don't need shopping malls, McDonanlds, bars & nightlife. Is Cha-am a good choice for us? Any advice/opinions will be much appreciated.
