Khao Sok National Parl Closed to December

The Surat Thani provincial administration Thursday announced the closure of its Khao Sok National Park until the middle of December following torrential rains.

The administration said heavy rains during the monsoon season would make it unsafe for tourists to visit the park so it would be closed until the monsoon season is over in the middle of December.

The park is famous for tourists who like trekking in forests.

The park has eight famous tourist spots, which are Nam Thalu Cave, Bats Cave, Siroo Cave, Tonekroy Waterfalls, Than Sawan Waterfalls, Tangnam Waterfalls, 11-layers Waterfalls and the trek way for watching lotuses.

I know the highway past the NP gets closed from time to time because of landslides during the Wet Season but closure of the Park itself indicates an even more heavy rainfall than isual.

I will post this information on Khao Sok and Khao Lak Forums too.

Thanks

I have just received this information which updates the report that Khao Sok National Park is closed until mid-December 2010. This is from a local guide in Khao Sok:

"What a strange decision: we have nearly no rain since one week!!!

But, as creazy as it sounds, the information is true.

Actually , it's true but not complete: no problem to enter the parc as long as you go with a guide!

It means, it's nearly like usualy: during rainy season, most of the trails are closed to people without guide, exept the 3 km to go to the first waterfall. So the only difference is that, even for those 3km, you need a guide to walk into the NP.

Of course, no problem to go to the lake too.

I hope this article will not make to much people change their route!"

and this from a friend in Khao Lak:

"This is a regular occurrence since 3 years, though the closure does not affect the usual tours: Khao Sok Elephant-Canoe Trekking and the raft houses on Cheowlan Lake. This information is coming from the Tour Ops in Khao Lak.

Remember Nam Talu Cave Disaster 3 years back? One result of this was to "close KS" for the core rainy season. BUT THAT AFFECTS ONLY the areas most at risk (Caves, Waterfalls, Deep Treks, etc).

Ah and yes: the highway, so it might be not possible for a day or two to get to KS due to landslides, but this is normal for this time of the year."

So once again, contact your tour operator if booked or thinking of booking.
