We stayed at Seashells for a few nights last August and although it is slightly north of the main area of restaurants and bars on Negombo's beach strip (Lewis Place), we still found several within a 10/15 minute walk from the hotel, either along the road or by strolling along the beach to get there. Alternatively, take a short tuk-tuk ride there and back. Cheap and fun.

Re. price of drinks. Well, you are always going to pay more for them in tourist hotels, whichever one you go to. We didn't buy many whilst there, but to give you some idea, a beer was 225 rupees, a coke or fanta was 90 rupees.

For tours, definitely don't book through the hotel because this will be much more expensive. If you come out of the hotel, cross over, turn right and walk for less than 5 minutes, you come to a place called D.S. Tours I think. This is run by Densil and Sunny Fernando and we used them for a short excursion whilst there. Really nice people and competitively priced too. Their tel. no. is 94 31 2279250 and the e-mail address is dstourssrilanka@yahoo.com if you want to contact them before arriving in Sri Lanka.

Since then, I have also used another Negombo based driver for a longer tour and I cannot recommend him highly enough. His details are as follows:

Lakshman 'Lucky' Bolonghe

146. Lewis Place

Negombo.

Sri Lanka.

Tel. 0094-31-2233733

Mobile. 0094-77-3578487

e-mail address is:

lucky_bolonghe@yahoo.com

Something you might also like to consider if you're planning on exploring the Negombo area for a day or two, is to use one of the official REGISTERED tuk-tuks (the registered drivers have a sticker in the front of their vehicle and wear white shirts). There were 4 in our party and we hired 2 of them (again, very easy to find - they patrol the road immediately outside of the hotels). Our two drivers were real gems. They spoke brilliant English, were safe drivers and it was much cheaper and much more fun to buzz around in the tuk-tuks for our Negombo touring.
