Get-away Weekend trips From Albany

Hey!

I'm looking for advice on weekend excursions from Albany. We are a couple in our late 20's looking to get away for a long weekend, somewhere in reasonable driving distance, probably over Columbus day weekend (Probably 3-5 days TBD depending where we go).

We've done this many times before and have hit Montreal, Boston, NYC, and Cape Cod. And now I don't know where to go next! We like seeing new places, being outdoors is good (although not big campers, or hikers) and we like keeping busy. Sitting on beach might be nice for a day, but we couldn't do it for more than that. But we love visiting cities as well.

Anyway, just wondering if any fellow Albanians had some favorite long weekend destinations they were willing to share!

Thanks!

How about western Mass.? We do Stockbridge (Norman Rockwell, Cheterwood), Williamstown (Clark Institute, Williams College Art Museum, MassMoCA). I realize that is heavy on museums.

Also Cooperstown is great, although it will be expensive during Columbus Day weekend. I would also suggest the American Hotel in Sharon Springs, which is close to Cooperstown.

Manchester, Vermont and stay at the Equinox. I have done that and had a lot of fun at a bar called Mulligans.

Another fun city that isn't on your list that might be just little too far would be Philadelphia. My wife and her friend take a trip each June for a long weekend and that is where they went this year.

I also read a good article in Budget Travel on Burlington just this summer.

I would also recommend Lake Placid and the Mirror Lake Inn and also a hotel the Golden Arrow (I think).

There are some other Albany regulars that might check in soon and we will see what they think.

Here are some of my favorites:

Any place in Vermont (I love Vermont) - pick your town, but make reservations now as Columbus Day weekend is the height of leaf-peeping season.

Finger Lakes - stay in a B&B and visit the wineries;

Corning - Tour the amazing Corning Museum of Glass, shop the glass studios, and the surrounding countryside is very pretty;

Niagara Falls - stay on the Canadian side, where most of the hotels and attractions are - the falls are spectacular;

Lake Placid - stay in the Mirror Lake Inn - visit the Olympic sites and High Falls Gorge and drive up Whiteface Mountain.

Or if gas prices don't scare you too much, try this jaunt:

Drive north to Ausable Chasm and tour the gorge. Then take the ferry from Port Kent across Lake Champlain to Burlington. Spend the night in Burlington, then make a day trip to Stowe. In Stowe you can drive the Toll Road up Mt. Mansfield and walk to the summit of Vermont's highest peak. Lots of quaint shops in Stowe, too. You can also tour the Ben & Jerry's factory outside Waterbury. Spend a night at one of Stowe's inns (if you can get a reservation) or stay another night in Burlington. The next day, check out the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, just south of Burlington - a fascinating collection of Americana. Then enjoy the scenic drive along the east side of Lake Champlain as you head back toward Albany.

Let us know if you come up with something special.

Great ideas above.

If you head to western Mass, Pittsfield has a 1903 theater which is just reopening (first since 1950's) after a 20 million dollar restoration. See www.thecolonialtheatre.org. Early comments on the "Colonial Theatre" are very possitive. Also, Barrington Stage Company just moved to Pittsfield and refurished a theater downtown and getting great reviews (www.barringtonstageco.org). Mount Greylock - the tallest mountain in Mass is in the area with an auto road to the top. There is also an 11 mile long bike path/ "rail trail" in the area.

Add to the list above:

Newport, RI

Rockport, Gloucester and Salem, Mass area.

Letchworth state park and area, NY

White Mountains on New Hampshire

Catskills... stay at one of the historic mansion hotels

Kenebunkport, Ogunquit, Maine areas

Connecticut casinos

I'm just north of Albany in Lake George, we also love Vermont for weekend getaways. If you check out places like Denny's, grocery stores etc you might find a vermont getaway book, or go to vermont.com sites and sign up for some. Stowe features alot of stuff to do, including waterbury nearby which has Ben&Jerry's main factory which you can tour. Manchester is gorgeous, my favorite for fall foliage driving. They have great shopping there including Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Carter's, Ralph Lauren, Nina's for jewelry, it's just the cutest street of great shopping outlets just at the base of the mountain. Try eating in town at the little restaurant that features pumpkin soup in the fall. Can't remember the name but boy I remember the soup! Rutland is surprisingly a bustling town with alot of shopping and fun things to do. They just had an ethnic fair last month with food from around the world, dancing, shopping, games etc. It was a great weekend of fun and fab food for very little money. Burlington and also surprisingly large with alot available. I enjoy checking out www.vermont.com, www.vermont.gov, www.vermontvacation.com to see what specials they have and what's going on around the state. It's a nice trip, their roads are well taken care of, and there is always something to see. Fall is the best time to run away to Vermont.
