driving route from tel aviv to tiberias and where to stop?

Hello!

We are renting a car and driving from Tel Aviv to Tiberias for one night, and then traveling to Jerusalem the following day.

Any advice on where to stop on the drive there and what to do once we get there or the following day before we head back? We would be going on a Sunday and coming back on Monday.

Thanks!

Much depends on your interests. Are you focusing on a Jewish Heritage experience? Or is a Christian orientation to your touring a priority?

A typical day in Galilee for a Jewish Heritage tour will look very different from any other sort of tour.

Caesarea is one site that should resonate with all audiences, in case you'd like to stop along the coast before heading into the heart of the Galilee region.

On the way to Jerusalem, you might consider stopping at Beit Shean National Park - there you'll find the largest Roman period excavations in Israel.

Taking into account Dave's suggestion, here's the suggested route:

Tel Aviv - Tiberias:

- From Tel Aviv take highway 2 northwards (direction: "Haifa")

- optional: stop at Caesarea National Park (exit to hwy 65 and follow brown signage to Caesarea. Later, get back to hwy 2)

- Exit at highway 70 ("Zichron Ya'akov" interchange) - from here follow signage to Tiberias

- Stay on highway 70 till "HaTishbi" junction where you take right to road 722 ("Tiberias" signage)

- Stay on road 722 all the way till you get to a T junction with highway 75 - take a right ("Tiberias" signage")

- Take a left onto highway 77 on the 2nd traffic light ("Tiberias" signage)

- Stay on highway 77 all the way to Tiberias

Tiberias - Jerusalem:

- Take highway 90 from Tiberias south.

- Follow highway 90 south (direction: "Jerusalem") for the next 126km or so

- Optional: stop at Beit She'an to visit Beit She'an National Park (road 90 goes through Beit She'an)

- At "Beit HaArava" junction past Jericho (126km down the road), take a right onto highway 1 direction "Jerusalem".

I suggest stopping at Zichron Yaacov for an hour abd then continuing to Zippori National Park. If interested in Nazareth religious sites drive via that city to Tiberias and skip Zichron. Or continue on highway 77 to visit the Arbel National Park.

South from Tiberias stop at Yardenit and the Isle of Peace at Old Gesher(requires advanced reservations). I don't suggest Beit Shean in the summer unless its 8 a.m. due to the high temperatures making the visit literally unbearable for most of the day.

I agree with Chana about Beit Shean. It's a fascinating site, but visit there only first thing in the morning during the hot summer months.

Zippori is, indeed, a great stop regardless of whether you're interested in a Christian, Jewish or secular focus.

If Christian sites are of interest, don't miss the Mount of Beatitudes, Tabgha and Capernaum on the northwest shores of Lake Kinneret. These sites are all within 30 minutes drive of Tiberias.

Friends of mine visited and we spent 3 days in the area. They weren't especially interested in religious sites. We stopped at Zippori on the way north to Tiberias. It's a good bit off the main highway and it turned out to be about their least favorite sight on the trip. There's a good bit of walking up and down hill and little shade. The mosaics are quite lovely, but if you aren't a fan . . . .

Beit Shean is difficult for you to visit early in the morning. You'd have to leave Tel Aviv around 6 a.m. to stop on the way to Tiberias. Or you'd have to leave Tiberias first thing in the morning, which would give you very little time to visit the many other sights in the area.

There are many things to see and do in and around Tiberias. Please narrow it down to what you are really interested in: nature, history, churches, Jewish heritage, hiking, etc.

Thank you for all your advice! We are interested in nature and history and heritage. I will be 5 months pregnant at the time. so we probably wouldn't be able to do any long hikes.

With those interests, I recommend you drive straight to Tiberias. There's lots to do in that area - Lake Hula nature park ("Park Ha-Hula), Agamon Ha-Hula for birds, Capernaum with it's ancient synagogue and church, as well as sites in Tiberas. You could also drive up to Tel Dan (easy walking). If you only want to spend that day in Tiberias, leave early in the morning, stop at Bet Shean for a visit and then spend the day at the Dead Sea.
