It was meant to be a relaxing getaway trip with my friends, but it was the most wrong choice we have made to visit Bintan Lagoon Resort.
Long check in wait:
It has been the longest while that we travel as a group. So we decided to take the earliest ferry and reach the resort around 9.30am. We were told to wait for an hour before our earliest check in. We went around the resort and were told to wait for another hour. We have only booked one day with the resort and it was reaching noon soon. It would not be even 24hours we could enjoy the resort and the front desk staffs were not helpful to provide us alternatives. It was hot and humid at the lobby, we were tired and hungry! While buses arrive with loads guests arrived and they were seemed to be ushered to their rooms, our group checks with the front desk staff again. I guess if we have continued to wait, we probably only get our room after 1pm!! Well, we should have known, this was probably the way how our trip would turn out, not a good start!
A 4-seaters electric golf buggy was allocated for each villa. As a protocol, the staff handed you a disclaimer and made you sign with focus on the items allocated to the buggy. They show no means to elaborate what you need to understand about what you sign and operating it. i.e any constraints on who is driving it, and breakdown costs of each parts should there be any accidents etc. Mind you, there weren’t any safety features on the buggy.
To operate the buggy, there were a few switches, the “GO” foot paddle on the right, the “STOP/PARK” foot paddle on the left, the directional reversing/neutral/forward switch below driver’s seat on the right. We are nevertheless excited to attempt on the buggy unfortunately our villa is situated on top of a steep slope. The only way to move it down the slope is to drive it down via reversing.
So we slowly and carefully maneuver it towards the entrance of our villa. Once we reached the tipping point of the sloop, we are mindful to release the “GO” and slammed on the “STOP/PARK” to adjust the speed. To our shock, the buggy continued to move and was accelerating!! It was a real nightmare when you know the buggy was no longer in your control!! At that point, we know that was it!! A split second later, we collided.
Thankfully there aren’t any passengers on board or behind and we managed to evade from the main entrance towards the road and knocked onto the left side of the wall instead. It was a loud thud and definitely invited great commotion. We are rooted to ground with shock!! Two of the nearby staffs came over but stand at a far distance and watch us without attending to see if we are free from injuries. We couldn’t have been more traumatized! The driver could have easily been flown out of the buggy with the speed the buggy went down the slope, or knock onto any passing buggies in front of our villa!! The driver was screaming for help but the staffs couldn’t even bother to come in and check with us if we were ok?? It was the beginning of the nightmare!! Fortunately all were well, except a minor sprain to the driver’s neck.
Putting the safety of the buggy aside, the slope of the villa was seemingly a trap for accident to happen!! We cannot imagine how Bintan Lagoon Resort couldn’t have paid more attention and assess such risk before. Apart from concerning their guests, they demand us to pay for the damage the accident caused! We were utterly surprise that the management had never put their guest’s safety on their first concern. The buggy’s bumper was slightly dented and the handle was slightly shifted. The wall which the buggy collided was slightly shifted. In total they demanded us to pay $1200++ Singapore Dollars!! We couldn’t believe our ears!! Operation Manager, Tony and General Manager Thomas simply ignored the fact that the resort should has partial responsibility to this accident! They simply ignored the fact that we could have been hurt in this accident and focus only on the amount we have got to pay!!! They could have done the minimum to change the slope to a safer ground for the buggy, or at least some emergency features on the buggy. Have anyone of us been injured, would they be held responsible for our losses? What could they have done to help us?? They lean on the fact that we are rushing for our ferry and have to give in to their “best price” $800!! For goodness sake, they were after all in Indonesia, what is the cost of the material and labor as compared in SG??!! How they even come up with that costing was also to our utmost dismay and skeptic! We tried to convince ourselves, but wouldn’t dissipate the fact they could have earn something out of this, there were just too many co-incidents even the way how they managed this accident.
We thought we could have at least a nice one night rest before we depart this revolting place. Apparently we were so wrong. Our villa is infested with ants!! We wonder how much of what we were paying for the villa actually goes to the maintenance like the wear and tear of the items in the villa or the most concern of pest control!! We left our stuffs on the table and within minutes you would to see a string of ants parading towards and within our stuff! From our packed food, toiletries, clothing to towels etc!! These were icing on the muffins just the wrong way!!!
Bintan Lagoon Resort, a place that retorts, provides shabby service and experience. Beware to go with your own risks! We for sure should have heeded other warming comments in the forum before we choose them for our getaway. Although the villa provided the opportunity to cook and dine with one another, we will NEVER patronage them ever again!!
