The routing can be Chennai (1 night) - Kanchipuram - Mpuram (1) - Pondicherry (1) - Tanjore/Trichy (2) - Madurai (1) - Munnar (1) - Periyar (1) - Allepey (or Kumarakom -1) - Houseboat (1). Here you need to decide if you want to spend the beach time in Goa or Kerala. I would recommend Goa. However from Allepey do go to Marari (1) which is an excellent beach before heading to Cochin (2) and then Goa. Do the entire trip Chennai to Cochin by car. You can find reliable Kerala based agents to handle your entire tour on www.keralatravelmart.org

3. Re: advise on a 15 day trip to the south

thanks NPJAI

what about rains????

is it that beach unaffected? I mean MARARI, never heard it before I will check

or is it better the east coast to prevent moonsoon?

I was really eager to go to Goa it was one of my travel dreams.....but rain coud ruin my dream holidays.!!!

Are roads in good conditions then? is it better to hire a driver or do it ourselves? How many hours by car?

Sorry didnt see you were coming in July. The Tamil Nadu portion should be fine as it doesn't rain on the east coast. You'll need to rethink Kerala as it will be raining (sometimes heavily there). Maybe you should continue from Madurai to Ooty / Mysore/ Halebid / Bangalore & fly to Goa from there. Road conditions are good. You can not drive on your own in India, it is not an option available to you. Drives will be 4 to 5 hours mostly at max.

Hi

My suggestion would be: Base yourself out of Chennai and complete Kanchipuram, Mamallapuram and Pondy on day trips by car. All of this can be completed in 2 days and reserve a day or two for Chennai city and surrounding.

Train from Chennai to Madurai (a day or two for the city and surroundings) and you can do Periyar - Munnar by Taxi. Instead if Munnar you can try Kodai which is closer to Madurai (though it is monsoon time at both Munnar and Kodai).

You can get back to Madurai and take a train to Trivandrum or Cochin or Allepy (like NJP said - watch the weather)

Rajan

6. Re: advise on a 15 day trip to the south

it sounds reasonable since in my tour there are many places and many km, and also too many places to stay what means being too much time travellling to and fro.

How long could it take us to go from CHennai to POndy by car? or maybe is btter to stay a night there.

another question, would it be better to stay in Chennai center or in Mpuram beach side?

I am thinking in dropping Trichy and take a plane Chennai-Madurai to save time and km.

Would it be feasible?

and then Madurai - Allepey/ Kovarum- Kochi and then fly to Mumbai.

so as it ends

Chennai (KAchip /Mpuram daytrips) 2- 3 days

Pondy 1 night or back to Chennai

Chennai-Madurai y plane

MAdurai x 2 days

Allepey

Kochi x 2 days

Kochi-Mumbay by plane

Mumbai x3 days

What about Trivandum instead of going up to Kochi?

Hi

Chennai to Pondy is around 2 hours by car (if you time your exit out of Chennai by 6-7 AM) to beat the peak / rush hour.

What you can do is, distribute your stay in Chennai over two stages.

First stage, fly into Chennai, drive to your stay somewhere on the ECR road, (Fishcove, Temple Bay, Ideal Beach etc depending on your budget) check in , complete the ECR sector (Dakshin Chitra, Mamallapuram etc) and possibly after lunch complete the Kanchipuram leg by a cab and settle down for the night.

Leave to Pondy next day morning and get back to Chennai - this time to the center of the city (say T.Nagar area - GRT, Residency, etc again depending on your budget).

Next day, finish your Chennai city tour (Kalakshetra, Kapaleeshwaran temple, Santhome Church, Marina, Fort St.George, St.Thomas mount etc) and possibly fly out to Madurai (there are a few in the evening).
