Backwaters in Kochi

Hi..

I read somewhere that there are no backwaters in Kochi, as in the beautiful coconut tree lined canals and lagoons.

I'm highly confused.

Isn't there a backwater day boat cruise possible from Kochi, as in go in morning, n be back to the hotel in Fort Kochi by night. Please help.

What you have read is correct There are no backwaters in Kochi. However there are lot of day trips in boats that are availabel in and around Kochi including those offered by KTDC. Day Tour of Pokkali Tourism Farm is such a popular experience - You can check details at fridaysunday.in/day-tour-of-pokkali-tourism-…

You can enjoy a tourist boat ride in the backwaters near Kumarakom (3hrs from Cochin) and return the same day.

There are waterbodies in Cochin connecting upto Alleppey, Kumarakom Kollam etc. But they are not as beautiful and life filled as Alleppey or Kumarakom. Few government run boat services are available and day trips are possible https:/…300

Surprised by the replies.

There are backwaters in Cochin than any other places in Kerala. But, they are not scenic as in Alleppey and not very popular for day cruise. You can take a motor boat and roam around.

Hi All,

I agree with Suresh .

There are backwaters in Cochin. (Poothota Region) and there are 07 hours and 03 hours backwater trip from fort cochin daily cost 850 / 650 INR as of now .

But if you are planning to Aleppey or Kumarkaom or Kollam i would recommend doing there as it is much beautiful

Have a Nice trip

Hi,

If you are planning for a cruise on tree lined canals and lagoons, Kochi would not be a great choice.

You want to start in the morning and return back to the hotel in Fort Kochi at night. The best way would be to take a bus (which ply regularly and cost about Rs 50) or a cab (which would charge you about Rs 1400) to Alappuzha. A bus would take you about an hour and a half while a cab would take about an hour. Board a house boat /boat about 10.00 in the morning and cruise around the canals and backwaters. You can have lunch aboard the boat (specify the menu you prefer in advance) and can return back to Alappuzha. If you alight from the boat by say 16.00 hrs, you can spend an hour at the Alappuzha beach. You may then return to Fort Kochi and make it to the hotel by 20.00 hrs. If you have booked into a decent hotel in Fort Kochi, they could assist you with booking a cab (if you plan to travel by cab) and a houseboat. It is always better to book a houseboat rather than landing up in Alappuzha and try to bargain a good rate for a trip.

If you do plan to travel between May end to August end, beware of the monsoon. Heavy winds and showers may result in your houseboat being anchored to the shores and it would be a pity to invest time and money on such an exercise.
