Itinerary suggestions

We have family working for 2 years in Bangalore, so our Kerala trip, probably in November 2013, will start and finish there - followed by the long flight home. Last year we went around Rajasthan and this year would like to see some of Kerala for about 2 weeks. Thoughts so far:

Varkala

Periyar

Kottayam (houseboat/canoe)

Fort Cochin

Munnar

Ooty (Yes, I know it's not in Kerala!)

Wayanad

We may meet the family on the way back at Kabini lake. About 2 nights in each place. Looking for a relaxing holiday - Rajasthan was wonderful and also exhausting! Obviously from the above we love scenery, wildlife, tranquility, culture. Homestays/B&Bs rather than hotels, although one or two luxury nights would be good.

Questions:

1. Is there a way of doing a round trip - given the above wishlist - without flying the first leg - presumably to Trivandrum.

2. Are we trying to see too much?

3. Is it likely to be cheaper (and more convenient) to have a car/driver for the whole trip rather than for each separate leg?

4. Are we missing somewhere not to be missed?

All comments/suggestions welcome.

Hi

1. Arrive at Kochi for Fort Cochin, Munnar, Periyar, Houseboat and Varkala. You can take a cab from Kochi for covering these places. After doing Varkala, drop at Trivandrum. From Trivandrum take a flight or train to Calicut and take a cab at Calicut for doing Wayanad and Ooty. Or even you can take a night bus from Trivandrum to Wayanad. You can do Ooty and Wayanad and catch bus to Bangalore from Wayanad, which is 6 hour journey.

2. In two weeks, the itinerary is fine.

3. You may also include Trivandrum/Kovalam and Kanyakumari in the itinerary. Also, think about Mysore.

Hello Sandalholme,

Some suggestions:

Include Cherai, which is close to Cochin instead of Varkala. This will help you to avoid a long travel from Central Kerala to South Kerala.

You may opt for

home stay at Periyar (Thekkady), Munnar, Wayanad and Ooty (you may also prefer Coonoor, a town close to Ooty).

house boat at Kumarakom (near Kottayam) or Alleppy

luxury hotels at Cochin and Varkala

1) Yes, round trip can be done easily. Check the first reply.

2) With 2 weeks in hand you can comfortably cover all these palces.

3) Definitely it will be cheaper and more convenient to have same cab for the entire trip.

4) There are lot of scenic places in and around the well known places mentioned by you. Make sure you make it to these places.

Happy Planning!

Many thanks for all your suggestions. I will look at these as I get into more detailed planning. First of all the flights need to be organised!

Many thanks.
