We've done the trip with a number of different agents, including John's Boat Tours, through our tour rep and with someone who worked at our usual shack but 'repped' on the trip part time.

Every time, when we got to Margao train station there was a rep from Melo Tours who brought all the people who'd booked with different agents together into one larger tou, people had paid different amounts for the trip.

He stayed with the group all the time and ironed out any problems, such as someone sleeping in your seat when you board the train to come home.

It IS an amazing trip, but be prepared for very early starts - pre dawn on all three days.

The train is an amazing experience and Hampi itself is unlike anything we've ever seen.

We booked with John's when we arrived in Candolim but don't leave it too late as they need to book triain tickets and they are in demand.

About £50 per person, depending on exchange rate and the hotel used

Hi Lucy,

Book the trip when you arrive in Candolim. It goes twice a week and Derek will tell you about available dates. The trip cost £60 in Feb 2012 and the exchange rate was about 72 rupees.

Takes about 8 hours on the train and stops about 5 times, you can get off, stretch your legs, Hubli is the best station to buy food.

You will stay in Hospet, be brave, get a Tuk Tuk to " MALIGI" for dinner. The best, so cheap by Goan standards.

HAMPI is HUGE and breathtaking, you do not need to be into history to enjoy it. Take a coracle ride down the river. Do NOT forget your camera.

Hope you like monkeys. You will be accompanied by a REP at all times, from pick up at your hotel until arrival back.

HOPE you love it as much as we do.

We booked with Angelina at Goan Footprints for the trip. You do need to be fairly fit as there is a lot of walking and the train journey is not the most comfortable. We also went to Maligi for our evening meal, it was nice although not cheap, but completed the experience.
