Hi

I have so far only managed one phrase "Makka Nakka" which is "I don't want" - easy to remember and works wonders when approached by those persistent sellers. Seems to work better than saying "No".

A better one to the kids if they are really persistant is `cello` pronounced hello with a `ch` sound at the beginning,it means go away.

Thank you is Sukryia(sp) pronounced shuck-rear. Both are Hindi I think but are understood widely.

I new the word "cello" but I was told it was equivalent to "f... off". We did use it once on some itinerant children who were being extra persistent and it did work. I bought the little booklet giving useful Konkani words last year and must remember to find it before my next trip at the end of this year. I am sure they appreciate people making the effort to know a few words.
