Safe to visit Sharm?

Hey, I booked to visit Sharm El Sheikh in October with my girlfriend. However, in light of news of the media blackout in Egypt for Mubarak's trial and state of emergency in Egypt in general being extended till November, I was wondering if it is still ok to go there. I know the FCO says Sharm El Sheikh has enhanced security and was ok to visit, and as a result tour operators will not refund bookings. I was just planning on staying at the resort and going scuba diving. Any advice from people staying or those who recently visited there would be great. Thanks!

Whilst there is no denying that some serious incidents have occured in Cairo, with regard to assaults against women (as per the FO site) to suggest that it is likely to happen in Sharm, or infer that it does happen in Sharm, is outrageous. That doesn't mean that travellers shouldn't keep their wits about them, just as they should at home or in any destination.

Usually I'm in Sharm with my husband but I've walked around Sharm alone, with a female friend & even hobbled round on crutches, alone, so was very vulnerable.

SNT82,

Safety has been the main topic on here since the end of June & there are countless threads about it. In a nutshell, you'll find some are quite worried & would prefer not to go, or have changed hols (losing money) or have gone & enjoyed it, or have gone & weren't quite as happy as they would have liked, but the majority have, so far, gone & enjoyed it. Some people are concerned about possible impact with regard to the Syrian situation & anti-western attitudes (warning on FO site).

That said, the occupancy is very low right now as there are only really Brits & Egyptians out there due to the restrictions by many governments in Europe, USA, Australia, Russia & Canada. A handful of Russians are out there as they've gone via the Ukraine. Consequently, some hotels have had to close for now & guests are being transferred to sister hotels or others of at least the same grade. Some have had to close some of their facilities & restaurants, laying off staff. This is likely to continue for a while. Some people are welcoming the quiet whilst others are worried that it will detract from a happy atmosphere.

We are trying to keep each other updated re: closures as news seems to breaking out on here before some travel agents are updated.

As it's your 1st time, perhaps the Tips thread at the top of the forum, along with the Top Q, over on the right, will be useful with general advice for you.

Maybe keep an eye on the UK FO site & sign up fo remail alerts?
