What is it with the variation in reviews?

I really don't get this.

I came to this forum to get some help with choosing a sharm hotel.

Every hotel has a stunning review one minute followed by a terrible one the next.

I think I am more confused than when I started.

I know we all like different things when away, but honestly.....

Btw, have gon for the Conrad as I have a small child who loves snorkelling, but probably wouldn't cope with going off a jetty straight into deep water.

According to about half the reviews I am going to have the holiday of a lifetime, according to the others I am going to have severe dysentery in a building site surrounded by rude Italians!

Oh - one thing. My husband will be diving, is it best to book via the tour operator or direct with Sinai divers?

Am off on the 26th March , anyone else?

hi! myself and mygirlfriend are going back to sharm on wednesday! we went last year and had a fantastic time!! we were a little worried too, as we had also read the mixed reviews. we stayed at the hotel sol sharm, which is lovely, but quite a long way from namma bay ( about 15 min on the hotel bus) we are staying there again this time as we got a great deal! the conrad is a nice hotel, so i would not worry too much!! you will find plenty of information on tripadviser, and plenty of people who have been to your hotel too!! if you go with an open mind, you will all have a fantastic holiday! remember, there is no pleasing some people, even if all the hotels were 10 star, some would still be moaning!! regards, jay.

Unfortunately some people focus in on a particular thing which spoiled their holiday which isn't a true reflection of the hotel - I've seen poor hotel reviews based on tummy bugs picked up in local restaurants, flight delays, quality of sand on the beach (hello, it's not the Seychelles), lack of english breakfast etc etc. There's a recent double post (TA should surely have removed one of them) for a very good hotel in Sharm which basically comes down to the fact that the hotel was overbooked, couldn't accommodate them but gave them a full refund and relocated them at another hotel. This is not exactly a review of the hotel facilities/experience, just an unfortunate incident which surely wouldn't have been resolved so well in most other hotels.

The bottom line is, you need to read through some of the bad reviews and 'read between the lines' and pick out of the good reviews the things which you think would appeal to you.....oh, and if you have concerns about particular things just ask on this forum. I read and contribute to a number of forums on TA and have to say this is one of the most active and helpful.

One specific question

Is it best to prebook direct with the sinai divers or to pre book the holiday company dive package?

I agree, most of the low rated reviews come from people who basically have a misconception of what 5* all inclusive means.

Take the reviews with a pinch of salt about the food/drink - a lot do seem unhappy with the food, the main being: lack of pork on the menu, they are truly amazed that they will not be able to get a 'proper' English fry up for breakfast. When we go away we like to try the local foods, it is part of our enjoyment of holidaying around the world.

Many also moan about the hassle from vendors - I don't particularly like it myself because it is incessant, but you have to accept it as part of the culture in Egypt. I do think that as the resort becomes more and more commercialised this will abate a little as the storekeepers might suss that, if they price up their goods and leave us alone, we will stop and buy, not hurry past avoiding eye contact with our heads down! ... but maybe that is wishful thinking.. haha

Agree with all the previous posts, take the reviews with a grain of salt. Read between the lines, sometimes people complain about the most trivial things. Some reviews are also "suspect", click on the posters name to check their posting history, some join one day post a "slagging" review and never return. I have read some terrible reviews about hotels that I loved.

Have a great trip and dont forget to write a trip report when you return!

I would contact Sinai Divers. I found them really nice & helpful. If you do a google search you will find the Sinai Divers website with prices.

Beach at Conrad is lovely with great snorkelling & view of Tiran Island.

Agree with everyone else on this topic. I went to Sharm 2 years ago in January and had a wicked time. Could not fault anything on the holiday. Also some of the beaches by Naama bay (like the one by Hilton Fayrouz) is really nice. You can also enter the sea from the shore or by a jetty as I did a beach dive (as I have never dived before) and walked from the beach into the water and put the tanks on etc by the jetty.

As for diving there are lots of PADI centres in Sharm mostly in the hotels but booking with Sinai divers would probably be the best option (and probably cheaper than going through tour operator).

Snorkelling! your children will love it. I bought flippers/snorkel/goggles the second I got out of the water from diving. You only need to go in about 1-2 metres to see loads of coral and fish.

The only 1 disappointment I had on our holiday was I wish we had left it until our honeymoon as it really was a holiday of a lifetime and would have made an amazing honeymoon. :)
