Electronic visa system to be ready in Egypt by May

This article is from Egypt Independent. No more queueing for visas and getting ripped off at Hurghada airport.

"In its weekly meeting Wednesday, the Cabinet approved the proposed electronic visa project, to be ready by May.

The project aims to renovate the passport and immigration system to keep pace with the latest passport systems around the world. The new system will contribute significantly to easing the burden on security authorities and tourists who visit Egypt, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser al-Qady said in a press conference at the Cabinet headquarters on Wednesday.

"Tourists will be able to apply for a visa online via a barcode they will receive. After the approval of the Egyptian authorities, a copy of the visa is sent to them electronically," the minister added."

Will we still be able to buy visas at Hurghada airport on arrival or will it have to be done on line in advance of travel. We are getting a bit confused now as first talk of price rises and now a new way of obtaining the visas. We travel August, any help would be great. We had these problems a few years ago with Sharm then nothing happened. Thanks in advance.😀😀

I don't think anybody on here has any particular insight on how these changes will be implemented (if they happen on schedule or at all) and it's just a case of wait and see.

I agree, if it is in May I'm sure the usual confusion will apply, a bit of prior notice would be a good thing.

Assume it will work similar to Turkey where you print out the visa and just show it on entry.

Let's hope the electronic visa is smaller ! Our passports are rapidly filling up with the large stickers.

Thank God for this, and not before time. When you've been up since 4am and endured over six hours of a flight the last thing you want is a crazy mob of 'Visa Salesman' charging towards you screaming and ready to rip you off to the tune of twice the actual price of the Visa which is $25.

Hurghada must be the only airport in the world where they legally allow these scammers airside to abuse travellers when they arrive, and it is high time it was stopped as it must be having a detrimental effect on tourism.

We never book a transfer these days, instead hire a local taxi to get to the hotel, because each time we did book a transfer, we were left waiting in the downstairs area for up to an hour while our driver was hustling new arrivals air side trying to sell them overpriced visas.
