Abul Simbel

Hi has anyone recently been on an excursion to Abul Simbel from a Nile cruise? We are going in September and I know that we can arrange a trip when there through the tour operator but wondered sort of price range?

Last year we booked a trip to Cairo with Egypt Tours Portal and it was brilliant so considering booking through them again but just want to compare prices.

Thanks in advance

I think CymraesUn must be referring to a trip to Cairo from Luxor and not Abu Simbel as there are no flights to Abu Simbel from Luxor.

We're both wrong! It was Aswan to Abu Simbel!

A comment re DIY and the possible effect on your insurance...........

Checking the FCO site at fco.gov.uk/en/…egypt it states (at the moment) :-

"When driving outside cities local security authorities may request that you travel in convoy. You should comply with these instructions. You should avoid travelling with unlicensed tour operators and should not travel around Sinai by road after dark."

Hi we went on this tour it cost us £70 each and took 3 hours to get there from Aswan we left at 4am in a convoy, we were there for 2 hours and then came back another 3 hours. The temple is very nice and impressive but I don't think it is worth the money.

That's very disappointing trish079, 70 quid is a lot to pay for something which you didn't really think warranted the expense!

On the other hand, we paid £60 each when we went from a cruise, and thought it worth every last penny! (And that was 15 years ago!) It all depends on how interested you are, I suppose. Mind you, the last time we were there, we paid 200le for a van from Aswan, there and back, and that was for three of us.

Along with the Pyramids and Hatshepsut's Funerary Temple, for me they make up the three most impressive of the 'must sees' of Egypt.

Best wishes,

Edward.

We flew Cairo- Aswan - Abu Simbel (then flew back to Aswan same day, about 2 hours in Abu Simbel). Our tour was arranged by Ahmed Hamed Yousif (google him if you want someone to organize your trip, guides, etc.). He recommended a tour on specific days. This was April 2012. He picked the day before the tour boats evening departure from Aswan. Tourism is way down since the revolution and Egypt Air apparently could cancel flights if they are too empty. Our direct Cairo-Abu Simbel flight was merged with one stopping in Aswan.

Also book early. The flight we did take, with a lot of cruise passengers, was pretty much full.

Another hint - we had a private guide, he skipped the multimedia presentation at the beginning and we had the temples to ourselves for about 15 min before the rest of the plane load arrived.
