We have been to Ecuador 4 times now and after visiting Cotacachi, Cuenca and Salinas, we have chosen Salinas as our new home. We plan to purchase a house in Punta Canero on the coast. The prices are very affordable for beach front property either here or in Salinas. Mike Sager and Andrea Maly are our realtors and have been most helpful. If you are visiting, the Hotel Amira is charming and one block from the beach or if you like big resort type hotels, the Barcelo is the main one and is right on the bay. If you have experience with buying property in this area, please share!

In beween La Libertad y Salinas (the 2 towns merged together few years ago) there are some nice sea front condo buildings where uper class ecuadorians live. That would be the only recommended place to live at la Libertad for a foreigner I think. In Salinas there are some great condos also, there is a new building right at the Malecon Ave. where the flats go for usd 150000 for buying. A lot of upper class people form Cuenca bought the whole building. Salinas is nice, specially in the hot seasson (Dec-May), it tends to be a very bussy town specially on weekends. Lot of people form Guayaquil crowd it on Sat and Sundays. In the cold seasson (Jun-Nov) Salinas is empty.

About the issue of people non investing and buying property it is true. Lots of locals are now not buying because they are scared of the government which is a bit too far "left wing".

Hi Mathea,

I find your posts interesting in that both Americans and Ecuadorians are buying property here in Ecuador. We have seen little or NO slowdown in purchases over the last four years. When you say nothing is selling or no one is buying....that is not true. I can point you to a number of realtors that are going to disagree with your comments. Do you live in Ecuador or have you been here recently? I have lived here almost five years now and things seem to be moving along nicely.

Take care,

Mike Sager

Redwulf, is completely true the fact about locals are not buying property. People are scared of investing money until our President Mr. Rafael Correa either changes his approach to his venezuelan budy (Mr. Hugo Chavez) or resigns to the job of President of Ecuador or gets kicked out by the people. Real state had slowed down thanks to him, and his un-competence to administrate our country. I am an ecuadorian citizen and I can give proof of that.

Of course realtors would do "anything" to make potential buyers buy property in Ecuador. In Cotacachi I had seen already a few american people trying to sell now the homes they bought 2 years ago... Sad.

Save yourself some money and do not use Mike Sager. He isn't even a licensed realtor. If you ask anyone who lives in Salinas they will tell you stay away. He takes other peoples property and marks it up 30% and sells to un knowing gringos. Do yourself a favor and take some time to meet a few locals and they will help you for alot less to find a licensed reputable realtor or even show you a few that are for sale by owner. Do not trust Mike Sager with anything. He simply rips of other americans as a living.and if you think he is good. He even drags his wife in to seal the deal. Bottom line stay away!

The Biggest thing that would scare me about Ecuador is those Andes Mountains! While they are breathtaking and humbling, they are scary if you suffer as I do from heights !

After one lives through N.Ireland with it's years of quiet political racial subterfuge, followed by 30 years of sanctioned warfare, believe me there is nothing to fear from Ecuador !

And as always the media hyped up the protests that took place in Ecuador!!!

It sells Newspapers along with on-line reporting !

So , go ahead , experience the serenity of Ecuador and its people , before the western world take it over completely !

Salinas is a nice resorty town that has all the necessary infraestructure for living.

The big problem about real state there now is that the house pricing got out of control. For example 5 years ago a 20 year old apartment with 3 bedrooms used to run for US 60000. Now owners are asking US 110000 for the same apartment, I just don't find it logical.....

Now, for middle class Ecuadorians it is relatively impossible to buy anything down there.
