chivas bus to Montecristi?

Our cruise company advertises a chivas bus tour to Montecristi for $149 which seems excessive. Would a couple of senior citizens from California be foolish to try this local transport on their own? Does the chivas stop near the cruise docks? we speak un poquito espanol, but muy poquito!

If the chiva is like those in Quito, it's basically an open-sided party bus with a band playing on the roof, and an alcoholic drink made from sugar cane passed around. You do it at least once for the experience, though I can't imagine doing it with a bunch of strangers (well, after cruising for a week or so, you might be good buddies by then). The price you were quoted, even for two people, seems really excessive. In Quito you can rent one for a couple of hours for less than that (and everyone chips in to pay for it).
