Public Buses Manta - Montecristi

Are there public buses running between Manta and Montecristi. I've seen the suggestion about a "Taxi" from the Oro Verde Hotel.

Is safety an issue if traveling on a public bus? On our cruise ship "Stop", I'd like to get over to Montecristi to get a good straw dress-hat. Are there any suggestions on locations of hat shops there, or can the same hats be found in Manta?

Anybody know the price of transportation and their frequency? Do they accept dollars or do I have to convert to their money?

Can't advise on buses, but the U.S. dollar is actually the currency here. You may get some Ecuadorian coins but they're worth the same as the U.S. coins. The Sacajawea "gold" dollar coin is used here a lot.
