Philadelphia is only about 45 minutes to an hour away if you're interested in that city. We are trying to make plans to visit the baseball stadium there and travel back to AC for an overnight stay.

What types of activities interest you? If you want to see a lot of New Jersey, then a more central location would be best. Also, Atlantic City is not a place to be unless you want to gamble...It is not a nice place...If you look at a map you can see that Atlantic City is in the lower part of NJ and not near many attractions.

Unless you really want to stay at the Shore, then I would suggest some place like Princeton. If you want the Shore then one of the northern Shore towns such as Spring Lake.

A lot depends on the other areas that you want to visit. Contrary to what others have said there is plenty to do in AC especially in August. AC is about a hour from Philadelphia, 2.5 hours from New York (your best bet would be by bus from AC), about 3 hours from Baltimore and 3.5 hours from Washington DC. You could take the acela train from Philadelphia as suggested. In addition to the major tourist areas AC is a short drive to Cape May, Wildwood, Historic town of Smithville, you can take the Cape May Lewis Ferry and visit Delaware your options are endless depending upon what you like to do and where you wanted to visit. If the beach, boardwalk and casinos are not important you might be better off in Philadelphia and use the train system to see the other major cities but don't believe anyone that tells you that you can't have a good visit in Atlantic City.

Yes, it is a good base, but the time of year you're planning, it might not be the best choice. It's high season, students & teachers are out of school, all the East Coast cities empty out for vacation and the 127 miles of NJ coastline are a big attraction, bringing vacationers, traffic, crowds and the highest prices of the year for accomodations. And the time of day you plan on returning to AC, is popular for people vacationing in other Jersey Shore towns, after spending the day at the beach, to head to AC for gambling, dinner and other fun, making traffic heavier. When I go to AC in Summer, if I drive and don't take the train to avoid traffic, I usually leave my car parked until it's time to leave. And AC's casino garages have an in/out fee, not a timed fee, so I'd be paying the fee [$5 with the casino's gaming card, or more because it's high season] every time I did the in/out.

You might find better deals near a city at that time of year. Since I live in Philly, how about Philadelphia? You can drive to Longwood Gardens, Gettysburg, Lancaster, New Hope, Baltimore, DC, The Poconos, etc. And still be able to drive to AC [& other Jersey Shore towns] on another day and get back to Philly at night. And Philadelphia itself has plenty to do for many, many days ~ uh, it's a city built on a swamp between two rivers, so the weather can be hot&sticky, this is one of the reasons why the Jersey Shore is so attractive in Summer

August is a great time to visit AC, but if you're seeking to use it just to drive to other places, you may find better prices at a more central location

Definitely agree that Philadelphia would be a better Central Base for you strategically (geographically) speaking for many of the reasons rship listed but if you like the beach, sea air, gambling, a few shows its a great choice. You have a good highway out of there and good rail / bus service.

Don't be scared off of the of the people who says AC is not a "nice place" its far better than Philadelphia crime wise lol...I have a feeling you won't be going to wander the ghetto on your trip on purpose anyway.

Plymouth I would suggest you come visit a bit later. September 2nd is our Labor Day. Our end of summer . The kids will be back in school and most vacations over. Atlantic City crowds thinned down to a trickle. Hotels rates also drop in price. The weather will be more comfortable and the ocean water will be at its warmest temperature. The weather here will be great for September and most of October. Tourist attractions you visit will also be far less crowded .

I would also suggest starting your vacation right after our Labor Day if you can. Two day trips I think are worth while would be Longwood Gardens and Gardens for Sculpture - each is avout 1-1/2 hrs. away. Philadelphia has so much to offer and if you actually stay there you can take a train into A.C.
