For all you Megabucks fans.
All he needed was a nickel and a dream. An 84 year old retired steelworker who decided to put a few more nickels in a slot machine before taking a bus home from Atlantic City is $4.2 million richer today after hitting a record jackpot. George Schaeffer's payout at Resorts was the largest in the 30-year history of the casino. "I didn't know what happened," Schaeffer said. The machine just stopped and one of the two ladies I was with said "Oh, my god, George, you just hit the big one." Once he did, the gambling great-grandpa became an instant celebrity with "people dropping by to congratulate me". A widower since 2004, the Pennsylvania man had taken a bus to Resorts early Sunday with two women friends to spend the day. They returned home in a limo. "We'd been there since 11am and I had made several contributions on the floor throughout the day. But after getting some dinner, I spotted this nickel Megabucks machine and decided to play a little more before the bus left. After about 20 minutes, maxing out his play at $2.25 a spin, he hit for $4,231,745.15.
What a great story.
