Planning to visit in April

Spending 3 days in New York , then plan to stay 4 days in Atlantic City , it makes sense , hoping to get public transport from Midtown East , then use Atlantic City as a base to visit Philadelphia and Maybe Baltimore ,and then get bus back to New York / JFK .

Wondering when best to book my hotel and how to get the best deals , so any advice appreciated .

I'm hoping I,m visiting somewhere that reminds me of downtown Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas, which is currently in a state of change, is more like yesterday's downtown Reno without the Freemont Street Experience. Atlantic City never was like downtown Las Vegas, and from what I can see never will be like downtown Las Vegas. A small caveat - Caesars casino first floor area does remind me of the casino in the Las Vegas downtown Golden Nugget. The bus terminal in A.C. should have bus runs to Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore, but I do not know since we normally drive to AC.

Don't get your hopes up that AC is anything like downtown Vegas. I'm not discouraging you from coming to AC at all, I enjoy it, but just don't want you to think they are alike.

As to public transportation, You can get a bus from NYC to Atlantic City, Some of them are Greyhound, Academy and NJ Transit.

there is a train between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. NJ Transit. In Philadelphia you can get an Amtrak train to Baltimore and Washington D.C. if that interests you.

As mentioned by all above, do not expect Atlantic City be similar to Las Vegas. Go and enjoy for it's own appeal, not hoping to find a duplicate Las Vegas.

There are also buses that go directly to the casinos where you'll be able to get free play. I don't know many details but it's worth looking into. It's probably too soon to be looking at hotel rates for April but if you are going during the weekdays you'll be able to get some great room deals. I would probably check out Caesars first then Tropicana as a place to stay.

It's great that you plan on visiting Philadelphia...the beginnings of the USA government (although the first capital was NYC). Much history in Philly, however make sure you visit the Reading Terminal Market. OMG! I make sure to make a stop there following my flight from Orlando, on my way to Atlantic City. I happen to love the ambiance of boardwalk environment of Atlantic City, with the roar of the ocean right there.

Undoubtedly, the area has suffered somewhat following the recession several years ago with many casinos closing. However, the casinos that survived have weathered the storm. Also, if you visit on a weekend, there are many activities going on. Hopefully, the weather will be warm enough to walk around during April.

I really wasn't that impressed with Vegas the one time I visited. I'm not much of a gambler, therefore the highlight of the trip for me was visiting the various casinos with their unique environments...similar to visiting the different resorts at Disney World.

Most Atlantic City casino hotels allow you to cancel with 24-48 hours, check the terms on their web sites. So start looking now and if you get a good rate book it. Continue looking between now and April and if you see a better rate cancel and rebook at the better rate.

If I you want to see the historic sites in Philadelphia you're better off taking the train from Atlantic City to lindenwold NJ and from there taking the Patco high speed line to Philadelphia as it will drop you off in the historic district.
