I'm beginning research for a trip to Colombia in November and am feeling a little overwhelmed with the unknown. Hoping I can get some guidance here.
We are planning on doing a 4-day Lost City trek after Medellin and after that, spending some time on the beach in Tayrona Park. My first question: where is the best place to set up home base-- sleep the night before the trek and store our luggage (is it okay if we have traditional luggage and not backpacks?)- Santa Marta or Taganga?
One thing I want to be really honest about, which might not please everyone, is that we are not the backpacker type. We are not upscale hotel people either, but we really appreciate a nice, clean, friendly boutique hotel. Bed bugs are a huge fear of ours. So, winging it and sleeping in a hostel isn't for us. We understand that for the trek, we will need to go with whatever accommodations the tours provide, but when we relax after in the park, we prefer not to rough it for the next few nights. Knowing this- is there some sort of option inside the park that would fit these needs or is it recommended that we take a day trip from Santa Marta or Taganga? We are big beach people and have heard the local beaches at SM and T aren't great so it would be preferable to be in the park for an overnight after all of our long treks.
We're also not "wing it" type of people. We prefer to plan everything in advance and then relax and go with the flow. So the idea of figuring out the bus and tour situations as we are there puts us off a bit. Can we reserve private drivers to the park in advance? Can we book our trek to Lost City in advance? Is there a tour company that is a little more higher-end than the others-- better food, clean accommodations, etc.?
I don't mean to come off snobby at all. This is our first trip after giving birth to our first child, so the blend of adventure and relaxation is important to us. We just don't want to rough it too much on this.
Thank you so much in advance and sorry for all the clueless-ness. Just trying to get a sense for how I can plan all of this to fit our needs.
