Is There Any Malaria Problem in San Andres?

Health Canada has recently put out an advisory about malaria in Punta Cana Dominican Republic. Is there any problems with malaria or lots of mosquitoes in San Andres? Should I bring some kind of insect repellant if I vacation in San Andres?

Malaria is not a problem in SAI. The main problem in Punta Cana was dengue fever which is also caused by mosquito bites. However that problem has been reolved now. It occurred after the bad hurricanes of 2005. There was lots of standing water near the resort areas which attracted the mosquitos.

However if you are prone to mosquito bites, bring some DEET repellent. I am usually good bait for the mosquitos but I do not get many bites while on SAI.

While in SAI (March), I didn't see bugs or insects. The only place which had lots of mosquitoes was the Decameron Marazul (maybe because it's built close to a mangrove swamp).

I think it would be good to bring a repellant, just in case.
