Posada Coco Bay, Providencia

We are planning a snorkeling trip to Providencia. Through our research we have discovered the best side of the island for snorkeling (east). And the only hotel that has superb snorkeling in front is Posada Coco Bay on the eastern coast of Providencia. So I thought I would ask if anyone: Has stayed at Posada Coco Bay or do you know someone who has? We have questions about the rooms; how far of a walk is it to a good restaurant and a grocery store. How is the snorkeling, etc? I will try to post my email on my profile.

Best regards, Sue

Hi Catfishdon,

I have accumulated quite a bit of information for Providencia. I will send it on tomorrow. Right now I must get dinner ready for my family!

OK, I am going to paste websites links, just let me know if you have problems accessing them. If you are going to Providencia primarily to SCUBA dive ... you might want to consider staying at a place that has a dive operation.

I understand Posada Coco Bay is in the residential section of the island and is very quiet, secluded, and beautiful. But maybe the dive boats can come and pick you up! We like quiet and remote and on the East side of the Island is the McBean Lagoon Natural Park, excellent snorkeling, and Roland's Beach Bar. Here is a description of the East side:

Bahia Maracaibo, East Coast

Found on the East coast of Providencia, Bahia Maracaibo has possibly Providencia's most beautiful landscape. Here one finds McBean Lagoon and McBean National Park, along with the beautiful Cayo Cangrejo (Crab Caye) a little off the shore (see photo above). The calm, crystal clear waters in Bahia Maracaibo and Crab Caye are ideal for both canoeing and snorkelling - turtles are frequently spooted in the waters around Cayo Cangrejo. The beautiful colour of the sea around Cayo Cangejo is almost beyond belief - there's stunning views from the top of this little island. The East coast of Providencia is possibly the islands most upmarket zone - Colombia's Formula 1 racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya has his holiday home here for example. There's a handful of very small little beaches along the East coast - but the bigger beaches are found to the South and West of the island.

I have come across a website (in Espanol) that appears ideal for making all of your travel arrangements: http://www.viajeros.com/posada-coco-bay (but since I don't read Espanol, I am not really sure)! And more: http://www.viajesinsular.com/ , http://site.aviatur.com/turismo.html (Colombia's largest travel agency (a good guy to contact at Aviatur is Mauricio Plata, who speaks good English - email mauricio.plata@aviatur.com.co or call Aviatur in Bogota on 0057 1 382 1616 and ask for him). And, of course, the airline, Satena, that flys from San Andres to Providencia: http://www.satena.com/

We live in Oregon so the best flight for us is from Los Angeles (LAX) to Panama City (PTY) to San Andres (ADZ) to Providencia. Here is the site I always use to look for flights, I have never found lower prices than these. Though Southwest Airlines does not show up in any airfare search engines. There are flights from Texas (IAH) and Florida. Itasoftware.com http://itasoftware.com/

Select: Search Airfares

Then: Login as a guest

Then: Enter your dates, etc.

(In the upper right corner is an option to do a Month-long Search. I use this to find the least expensive dates to fly).

Once you get the search results I always sort by Shortest Duration.

The flights from LAX are much shorter and you don't have to fly into Colombia first. So if you can find a cheap flight to LAX that might work for you.

And please let me know how Providencia was!
