Security alert fo Medellin

I see Tripadvisor has posted the US security alert for Colombia.

Bottom line here - if you stay away from drugs, prepagos and stay out of neighborhoods you should not be in - Medellin can be as safe as any US city - the biggest risk is getting run over by a bus - they don't slow down for anyone - kids, old ladies the blind - no one.

The standard U.S Gov. Travel alert seems to be as common as sliced bread on travel forums these days.

I just chalk it up to the usuall fear mongering the State dept. feeds ppl. to deter them from traveling to an amazing country like Colombia. Hmm what's next a travel alert on Norway!

Travelers need to use their own common sense where ever they choose to travel...Playa

I have a security alert for my hometown, Oakland, California, USA. We're having shootings here pretty much every day. Across the bay in San Francisco an 11 year old girl at a sleepover got hit by a stray bullet this past weekend. So I'm warning all the Colombians to stay home, where it's safe.

Yeh I was surprised to see that all of a sudden, especially as it doesn't seem to relate very much to Colombia...

You can read my overall thoughts here: seecolombia.travel/blog/…

Basically, exercise caution, don't take unnecessary risks and, importantly, don't let safety concerns overshadow what should be a great vacation.
