Wondering what is the cheapest and best way to get from Toronto Canada to cartagena. Also does anyone know of cheap safe hotels/motels near where the main action is. Thanks

The cheapest option is probably going to be the llc, Spirit Airlines, from NYC. Otherwise you'll have to route through Bogota with Avianca etc.,or through Panama City with COPA.

What do you mean by "main action"? The nicest place to stay is the old city, but there are also beach hotels and backpacker options in the Getsemani district. Check out the reviews here on TA and you are bound to find something in your price range. Of course, it all depends on what you mean by cheap. Cartagena is expensive by Colombian standards!

I went to Cartagena and stayed at Las Americas on a package deal 3 years ago. Canadian tour operators cancelled all package tours in the summer of 2006 and haven't revived this location since. Damn shame too as Cartagena is a great vacation destination but we seem to have a large number of tourists who are frightened off by yellow fever, malaria, drugs, kidnapping and god know what else, but for the most part these issues are pure nonsense. Mikey if you can get a package out of New York or Miami, go for it. In my mind this the best vacation spot between here and Buenos Aires.
