Why are you going to Jilin? Nothing interesting for tourists there beyond one day.

Do you have a Chinese drivers license?

Good for you - wanting to see 'non-tourist-trap' China. Don't know why JPDeM says there's nothing there... it's just different (not terracotta warriors with thousand of tour groups...). Definitely go to Changbaishan, but be aware that's the one place there ARE lots of groups; and you'll be railroaded into paying a lot to get into the park, plus more for buses/jeeps inside. But with your own car you can easily get to the west entrance as well as the usual north entrance, which enables you to hike up to a viewpoint above the crater lake. Ask at the Changbaishan Woodland Youth Hostel by the train station in Erdaobaihe ('Changbaishan town') about their guided trips.

There are a lot of other places if you're interested in history/remains, such as the Koguryo (Korean) kingdom remains in Ji'an. Get an up to date map and be careful of distances (you will spend a lot of time driving, on pretty bad roads in some areas; in other places, there are new highways).

Of course you could also go all the way (long way!) to Haerbin, go to a nature reserve to look for cranes...

Enjoy.
