My husband and I will visit Shanghai in mid-December with our 27- year-old daughter and 21-year-old son. We plan to take a day trip to Suzhou. My daughter would like to see Chinese opera. I think we would appreciate just a little taste of opera, not a full show, since we do not speak Chinese. I have read that we can see a short Kun Opera show and Pingtan at one of the following teahouses, but I cannot verify that these are still open: (1) Guangyu Storytelling Hall at No. 8 Diyi Tianmen, Guanqian Street; (2) Pinfang Teahouse at No. 24-25 Xijiaomen, Guanqian Street; or (3) Plum and Bamboo Storytelling Garden at No. 30 Taipingfang, Stone Road. Alternatively, the Su Show at Suzhou Science and Cultural Arts Center looks good, although it is a night show so we would have to catch a late train back to Shanghai. I have not found any similar shows in Shanghai, although we do plan to see Shanghai Circus World and the Face Changing Show at Ba Guo Bu Yi Restaurant. I would appreciate any suggestions on the best way to get a flavor of Chinese opera.
