Day trips out of Puerto Natales

Am thinking of staying in Puerto Natales as the accomodation in Torres del Paine seems very expensive (we are a family of 5), am now looking at day trips, we are not interested in really long treks just would like to see some of the beautiful scenery, has anyone been on the "Full Day Torres Del Paine" tour on the Comapa Turismo website, if so, how was it? Also while in P/Arenas thinking of doing their boat trip to Isla Magdalena to see the penguins, interested in anyone's comments if you have done this too, thanks for your help, hotels for family of 5 suggestions in either of these two locations would also be helpful.

sure, you have several possibilities doing day trips, from Natales, day trips to Torres del Paines, Calafate and glaciers Serrano-Balmaceda (by boat) at Punta Arenas, day trips to Magdalena island and Fuerte Bulnes. As a family I think is more time and cost wise to rent a car (and more fun)

Thank you for your suggestions Fernando, I agree a car may be simpler than bus and tours, I will do a bit more research, organize an international driving licence, are the roads good and well marked, do the hire cars come with satellite navigation? Haven't booked yet, but at the moment am thinking probably 2 nights in Punta Arenas and 3 nights in Natales, we will be flying from Santiago to P/Arenas, should we organize the hire car prior to arrival or is it easy to just get one when we arrive?

By car it takes 2.5 hours to reach TDP whichever way you go. The roads are gravel with significant potholes; they cannot be described as good, but vehicles manage 80kph despite this. Punctures average about 3 per week according to the ranger I spoke to. If it's dry, expect clouds of dust from other vehicles.

Sat nav isn't necessary - there aren't many roads to choose from.

Hire before you go to be sure.

In PN be sure to dine at Afrigonia - it's superb.
