"Angkor View" guesthouse - avoid on principle (re Scam Bus)

The Angkor View guesthouse should be avoided due to the fact that it is associated with the 'Scam Bus' from Bangkok.

This is the bus service where they arrange an overcharged $30 'quick' visa before arriving at the border, despite the fact that you can get one for $20 on the spot when you arrive there. Furthermore the bus then takes over 4 hours longer than stated to get to Siam Riep almost midnight when arrival time was previously stated to be 7pm. And once you do arrive it is outside the Angkor View guesthouse, which shares many of the same staff.

Don't stay at this guesthouse - go somewhere more deserving.

Don't be too judgmental on this issue and don't knock Angkor View.

Most certainly there are rip-off bus operators that do the Bangkok/Poipet/Siem Reap circuit and charge too much - but in Cambodia a fairly standard means for a guest house to "market itself" is to pay the bus driver or bus companmy to deliver passengers. Us westerners might see this as part of one big scam - but the payment to the bus driver isn't seen that way locally: no more than if I paid a direct mail company money to "deliver" me responses.

Just remember that local business people are lifting themselves from ground zero - and they don't have all the marketing tools that we are used to. More are using the net effectively, but where an owner isn't particularly literate in English (how's your Khmer for that matter?) then the internet isn't so easy to use.

None of us like getting ripped off - but Lonely Planet and many other sites warn tourists about the bus operators. Just be fair when it comes to "blaming" the guest house. The owner probably paid money and to his dismay the customers all walked. He feels ripped off too.
