See the reviews here:

Then make up your own mind based on what others have said. If you go , beware the scams that often get mentioned in the reviews. My thoughts were that someone is making a lot of money here exploiting the poverty of the villagers: something I find obscene.

the closest floating village to siem reap is about 14km from town and takes about 20 mins by tuk tuk.it is a large floating village called chong khneas, everything is floating including police stations, churches, markets, homes, schools, gas stations, basketball courts, shops ect ect .

depanding on the time of year will depand on where the floating village is located,in the low water season the floating village moves to the lake proper and in the high water season the village is moved to the river instead.regardless a typical tour will last about 1.5 hours by boat to travel up the river and onto the great lake.

its best imo to go with an organised group.one that has been around for many years is the tara riverboat, they have a old cargo boat converted into a bar/restaurant type vessel and they have pick up from siem reap included and local lake guides.

may pay to look at canbypublications for other villages also that are further out but get less tourists.these include prek toal, kompong khleang, kompong phluk .

My suggestion to avoid scam is to visit of fishing and floating villages on the great Tonle Sap lake are Kompong Khleang ( 33 km a way from Siem Reap and going there by Tuk Tuk around $ 20 to $ 25 both ways, admission fee $ 20 per person included boat trip around there 2 hours ) and Kompong Phluk ( 22 km a way from Siem Reap and going there by Tuk Tuk $ 12 to $ 15 for both ways, admission fee $ 20 person included boat trip around there an hour and half ).

And please if you do go to Kompong Khleang, don't be passing things out to kids or pretty soon it will be just like Chong Kneas. :)

Just be aware of the very considerable construction work and dredging work currently being under taken at Kompong Pluk by the Korean concessionaires there!

I was quoted $42 pp for 1/2 day trip to kompong phhluk by "beyond unique escapes' seemed a little pricey. (includes transport from siem reap)

Do you know which group charges $25 pp for the boat ride? We can organize our own tuk tuk or car.

There are 2 of us. Are there any others who would like to share the car for Jan 11?

Thanks

You really don't need a group tour - take a tuk tuk, they will deliver you to the ticket office where you will pay $20 per person, and you will be directed to a boat. The boat driver will make the usual stops - and go out further to the lake where they will turn around and drop you off where they picked you up. Watch out for all the people offering to sell you notebooks for the school children - and don't accept the offer to "visit" the school - think about how disruptive it is for the classes there, and something that would never be allowed in most visitors home countries.
