water festival Nov 23-25

We are hoping to be in SR for the water festival. Anyone been to that and have any advice on how to enjoy it? Is it really crowded?

Hi, while there may well be a festival in Siem Reap, the big water festival in November is on the river in Phnom Penh, we have timed our next trip to avoid it but that is our choice and much to the dissapointment of our friends in PP who are very excited about it. We expect and hope to see some of the boat crews training for the big race when we are there in early November, it is apparantly the highlight of the festival. For us it is about the crowds which we have been told are massive, it is a very popular event and people come from all over Cambodia to be part of it.

I hope that you get some replies from those that have experienced it for themselves. Cheers.

We will be in PP for the water festival in November have heard all sorts of stories about how crowed the place will be ., but as we are stopping by the river we hope that will help, but by all accounts the races are good and fireworks every night ..so we are looking forward to it ,

The Water Festival in Siem Reap is an exiting event too. Its certainly less crowded than in Phnom Penh which is a huge event with hundreds of boats .

The boats that race on the Siem Reap River smaller. but viewing is easier as the river is narrow and you can get close to the action. In Phnom Penh the Tonle Sap river is 1km wide; so you need binoculars or a long telephoto lens to see close up.

Siem Reap is crowded at this time; the river area is closed to traffic while the racing is going on. Thankfully most hotels in the centre are easily walk-able to the event. It is hard to drive across the river as most of the bridges are closed to traffic.
