Stocking up in Kasane

Stocking up in Kasane

We are five Swedes who will be travelling from Maun through Moremi and Chobe in April 2014. In Kasane we need to stock up for a ten-day trip to Nxai Pan and CKGR. We have never been in Kasane before and will only be there some hours. Will we be able to buy biltong, frozen meat and fresh meat in Kasane? If so where? Are vegetables and fruit available in the town? Any tips appreciated. With thanks, Roland Stanbridge.

Kasane is a small resort town on the Chobe River, and you'll find at least a couple of stores (Spar and Choppies come immediately to mind) where you'll be able to buy groceries, including vegetables, meat, etc. These stores are surprisingly similar to what you might find in Europe or the USA. There may be other options too, but these are two that I know for certain.

Enjoy your trip, Botswana is amazing!

1. Spar or Choppies for Meat and Veg and dry goods.

2. Rons Fresh Produce for fresh meat and veg

3. There are 3 fuel stations (Shell in Kasane, Engen in Kazungula and one more on the Zim road)

Every so often we have shortages of , for example tomatoes, but you can pretty well always get a wide range of food. I believe Spar get their deliveries on a Tuesday so round about then you would have the greatest selection.

Have a great time.

Hi Roland,

Just a quiet word of warning ...

There is a veterinary post just north of Shorobe (between Moremi and Maun, the post is about 70km from Maun). They can (and often do) confiscate any fresh meat, diary products and fruit (and occasionally vegetables). You may not carry these products southwards in Botswana. So don't stock up on too much fresh products in Kasane - you must finish them in Moremi.

They will allow cooked meat through.

You can re-stock in Maun.

The same applies on the road out of Maun en route to Nxai and CKGR. The police post / vet post about 70km east of Maun can (and often does) confiscate all these products (fresh, uncooked meat, fresh dairy products, most fruit). You can expect to have your fridge (at least) and storage bins searched (sometimes just a cursory look).

They sometimes add items to the list (it depends what their larder is lacking). I believe even "peanut butter" may be a restricted item.

Please ensure that you have enough drinking water and some auxiliary water with you.

No, you will not be able to take meat from Botswana to Zimbabwe. There is no reason to, as you can buy whatever you need in Vic Falls

WE were surprised to find a huge Supermark in Kasane with everything we needed (pitty I did'nt know about Ron's Butchery - next time yes!) and next door a Liquor Store for wine and beer as you wish. Also a Bancomat to draw money! Kasane is great.
