Salzkammergut rainy activities

Have two more days left in St. Wolfgang (1 June) and we feel a bit rained out. Already went to Salzburg and have Hallstat and ice cave planned for one of the days. Any suggestions for day trips or activities that would be good despite the rain? We have a car and anything up to a 6-7 hour round trip is acceptable (unfortunately the rainy weather seems to be everywhere, down to Mediterranean). Our preference would be something dry and scenic without a lot of walking.

Thanks!

Hi!

If you like castles, you can go to Chiemsee, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. They are all great and beautiful.

Except for possibly Chiemsee (the closest at 90 min each way in GOOD weather), the castles mentioned are not a practical day trip from St Wolfgang. The other two (Neuschwanstein and Linderhof) are over three hours each way (also in optimal traffic conditions, which you will not have) and typically have lots of visitors (at least for Neuschwanstein). A somewhat somber experience (although appropriate for a dreary, rainy day) might be a visit to the Mautheusen concentration camp memorial, which looks to be high enough from the river to not be affected by the Danube flooding (the town is on the river edge and has already experienced some flooding). Melk Abbey is another possibility since it is high above the river (although the town of Melk may be affected) and is closer to you than the Fussen castles (about 2 hours in good weather). Lots of potential washouts and other road hazards as well as general slowing of traffic in the rain are highly likely, so you might want to rethink your 6-7 hour r/t limit-with this weather, that might not get you as far from St Wolfgang as you might think.

Thank you for all the replies. Most of the local flooding wasn't too bad, some standing water but still passable. The worst we saw was A8 at exit 101 in Germany that was completely drowned.
