You need to go to/through Salzburg in any case! The trip from Munich Airport to St. Wolfgang will involve at least three transfers, one from the airport train to the Salzburg-bound train, another one from the aforementioned train to regional bus #150 at Salzburg Main Train Station, and an ultimate one in Strobl to the bus to St. Wolfgang.
The Munich Airport to Salzburg part is really easy. Messing around with the buses from Salzburg is actually the more pain.
If you use the Bayern Ticket using the Regional trains to Salzburg (train every hour journey takes 2hrs) then the ticket only costs €22 for the first person then €4 for every additional person up to a max of 5 people.
Only the fast ICE, IC, RAILJET and EC trains are excluded (there are for instance also these fast services on the Munich-Salzburg line)
Valid from 9am weekdays (midnight weekends) until 3am the following morning
Ful T&Cs and click on Bayern.
People often use the Bayern ticket for day trips to Salzburg or just as a cheap way of getting there.
When coming from the Airport you just take the S8 to the Ostbahnhof (runs every 20mins and takes ~ 30mins). It arrives at Platform 1. Salzburg regional trains normally from platform 8.
Not far to walk as the Platforms are double platforms (i.e 1& 2 together , 3 & 4 etc)
Can use www.oebb.at Austrian rail to show overall route from Munich Airport to St Wolfgang including bus connections.
