For a trip going from Bangkok to LP, I can only find 2 airlines: Bangkok Airways and Lao Air.
Is one airline more recommended over the other?
Actually both are good.
They are both good. Bangkok Air leaves about an hour later than Lao Air in the mornings so if you don't want an early start then that may be the best option. Planes are very similar with great in flight service. I went over to Bangkok a couple of weeks ago - LP - BKK (Bangkok Air) $238, return BKK - LP (Lao Air) $183. A big difference on that occasion. Usually similarly priced with Lao Air about $10 cheaper.
Sometimes Bangkok airline will be more expensive ..but if u r lucky ..maybe special promotion can be ....Lao airline is very nice ..and good service
I prefer BKK airlines (smoother flight) and have found the prices cheaper than Air Lao on their website. Also they are so helpful at Bangkok Airport, tracking down lost luggage etc.
Actually Bangkok Airways is dearer not cheaper. The smoothness of the flight depends on the air turbulence which is a factor no airline can control.
We've flown both Bangkok Airways and Lao Air between Bangkok and Luang Prabang and were happy with both. Both use similar equipment (ATR-72) on that route. The timing of the flight is what usually drives our choice.
Depending on your itinerary, you might consider buying a Bangkok Airways Discovery Airpass. There are some other restrictions but if you are flying 3 legs or more in Lao, Thailand and Cambodia (plus some other selected countries) it will likely be less expensive than buying each routing separately. It can be used on both Lao Air and Bangkok Airways.

We used the Discovery Pass last July for the following flights: BKK > LP (BKK), Xieng Khouang (Phonsavan) > Vientiane (Lao) and Vientiane > Siem Reap (Lao) all flights were great, departed on time, service with a smile, landed on time, - wouldn't hesitate to use either airline (or the Air Pass) again. Pass must be booked through a regualr travel agent (not available online) and not available in Thailand, Cambodia or Laos. You book seats just like you would on any flight - this is not a pass where you can buy the pass for some future time and just rock up to the airport when you want to use it.
