Currency

When we were in Vientiane last year we were easily able to change AUD into the local currency which was mainly accepted wherever we went. However, I've noticed that a number of people, hotels, business etc are quoting USD prices so wondered if that was the more acceptable currency in LP. It's been some years since we've been there and I simply don't remember.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

We paid in kip everywhere in Loas. Just used the ATMs which dispense kip, though the hotel we stayed at in Vte quoted us in USD and then gave a rotten exchange rate when we went to pay in Kip.

There are also exchange booths (which I use as I don't travel with an ATM card) who will be happy to take any hard currency. You get better prices with kip and if you are traveling off the beaten path, they sometimes don't want to mess with dollars...

I know of two in Vientiane in the tourist area, very convenient. And yes, there are banks as well. The rate seems pretty good, and be sure to count your cash before you leave. Yes, euros-kip can be easily exchanged.

Hi travelkat,

We found our hotel quoted in US, but wanted payment in kip. So I would advise confirming the price in kip (and make sure the conversion from US is reasonable) when you book to save any dramas.

Restaurants mostly show prices in kip. Shops may show kip and US dollars, but we found most only took kip anyway - so once again, just confirm the kip price.

Hope this helps,

- k

Agreed heartily! Over the years I've run into a few hoteliers that gave decent conversion rates.....and a whole lot more that didn't.
