Day in Alexandria - visit Hadra Military Cemetery

I asked a similar question some two years ago but my visit is now firmed up.

My wife and I arrive by cruise ship on November 2 and my main reason for the visit is to go to my Uncle's grave in the above cemetery. I know the situation of the grave and Google tells me where the cemetery is. My question is - Would it be feasible to hire a taxi for say three hours to enable me to get flowers, visit the cemetery, taking numerous photos and generally have an unhurried visit. Any spare time could then be taken up by a tour of the sights in Alexandria.

Could someone give me an idea as to the possible price of hiring a taxi for three hours? is it easy to hire a taxi at the port and do my plans make sense to those who know the city.

Many thanks,

It is completely feasible and finding a flower shop is probably more difficult than finding the cemetery in my opinion. I estimate it would cost you 50 EGP but it's difficult to guess what the driver might try for. 100 EGP would be very generous but that is only 10 GBP.

Make sure you have your map with you and can direct the driver as he may not know the location or understand your pronunciation (if you take the route along Abu Qir/Tariq Al Horreya you should find it without much problem - and if you get to Sidi Gaber station you know you have gone too far). By the way, don't mention that it is near the university as there are so many campuses the driver won't have any idea where you want to go.

You will pass close to the Roman Theatre (Kom El Dikka) on the way there which you could return to, or you could ask your driver to return via the Corniche and stop along the way at places such as the library and see other sights on your way back towards the cruise port.

The weather should be nice but be prepared for the possibility of a rain shower at that time of year. I hope this information helps. ILME

Many thanks indeed for this useful information.

I am in touch with Carrefour in Alexandria. I'm hoping they will have flowers. Just hope they are not too far away from Hadra Cemetery

The War Graves Commission tell me it's on Al Horaya turning right onto Sharia Manara.

I'm sure my translator on my Iphone will get me there.

Many thanks.

Going via Carrefour is a bit out of your way. I can't remember seeing flowers for sale in the Alex branch, but there are many shops selling flowers round the city, I just can't think of any that would be exactly on your route. There aren't always road signs.when you need them but you should be able to find Sharia Al Manara from Tariq Al Horreya which is a main road.

Hello Wendy,

Thank you for your notice, which,of course, interests me.

Am I to understand that you would be escorting us and is this what you might call your normal business.

There would be four of us and in addition to going to Hadra, I now need to go to the other cemetery at Chatby which I know is not far away. I have to take some photos there of some graves for an acquaintance of mine.

To summarise, we would like to have a taxi (vehicle) for three hours to enable us to go to Hadra, Chatby and then to do a short tour of Alexandria, not necessarily getting out of the car, using upanything that is left of the

three hours.

Could you give me an idea of the cost involved please.and I will then get in touch with you about confirmation of the details.

I've just returned from a cruise on Queen Victoria.

We had a day in Alexandria where I wished to visit both Hadra War Memorial Cemetery and Chatby War Memorial Cemetery. My original intention was to hire a taxi for about four hours which would give us time to see the sights of Alexandria as well.I would have found that very difficult on reflection.

Fortunately I was able to contact Wendy Paton, a New Zealander living in Alexandria, who escorted us throughout. She operates under traveltoegypt@vodaphone.co.nz She took us to Hadra and Chatby Cemeteries and then a tour of Alexandria. It was a great relief to us to have her do this and I would have no hesitation in recommending travellers to her. She is knowledgeable on matters Alexandria and made our stay there a pleasant one.
