Now that it is not possible for me to fly into Alexandria from Australia we thought that we would catch a bus from the airport. Our flight arrives at 11am. Has anyone done this trip and what are the problems, if any, for 2 middle aged ladies?

I've done the trip from the airport a few times on the bus. The good thing about it is that it cuts off all the travel at the Cairo end - just make your way to the bus station in the airport and Superjet leave direct from there about every couple of hours until about 8pm.
The journey is quite long as it makes a stop in Cairo before it seems to get going. So it sometimes takes about 3 and half hours, on a good day.
I haven't been on it since they moved the bus station to the out of town one - and if it has moved out there - it's a bit of a hike into the town centre in a taxi - so be prepared for that.
Thanks. I have been enjoying reading your advice to other travelers.
Do you mean that the bus station in Alexandria has moved out of town? What would the taxi fare be roughly and do you pay an extra fee for luggage as some places do?
I did the trip by bus in 2006 but in the opposite direction Alex - Cairo, we took a taxi from our hotel - The Cecil to Sidi Gaber (sp?) bus station which was where the Superjet bus left from then for 10LE, probably cost a bit more now but still cheap. Egyptian Goddess, has it moved from Sidi Gaber?
Nefertari: Everyone keeps telling me that the Superjet has moved from Sidi Gaber to Mowqaf which is on the start of the highway to Cairo. (Almost near Carrefour and the City Centre Mall if you know those places) I'm not often round the back of the Sidi Gaber station for a peek - and haven't had call to use Superjet in quite a while - so am only going on what other people in Alex tell me.
Melbournegranny: Whether you have to pay extra for your luggage probably depends on the driver you get, and also the fare you agree on (And probably which bit of Alex you're going to.)
I can tell you what I would pay to get to Carrefour from various areas of Alex and hopefully that should give you a bit of a rough idea of what to aim for:
From the Cecil to Carrefour I pay about 10 LE,
From the Mercure Hotel (in Roushdy area) Still about 10 LE
From any further out 20 LE.
You'll probably end up paying a bit more than that, it'll depend on your bargaining skills from that point. Even if you double those figures you should still be onto a good thing.
Also, not all taxi's have roof racks, and if you travel anything like me, there is no way even one person's luggage will fit in the back of a standard Alex taxi - so check for roof racks before you start negotiations!
Thank you Egyptian Goddess, if you get the time I would appreciate you "peeking" lol. Will be there in October but will not be using the bus, once is enough, imo. I do remember passing a Carrefour on the way to Cairo by private car but can't remember how long it was after we left the Cecil, so not sure of how far that is from Alex.
Thanks Goddess. That has been very helpful. We travel light so don't imagine luggage will be a much of a problem but I will watch out. We are staying at Le Crillon. It's near the Cecil, Winsor Palace etc. but more modest.
Hi there,
Can someone please tell me how much it would cost for a limo between Cairo Airport to Alexandria? I would prefer to get a limo direct rather than catch a bus or get to the city and then take the train.
Also do the limos need to booked in advance or can i just go ask for one (actually we will need 2) when i get to the airport? If i need to book then how do i do that..
If anyone can help that would be great.
