1. You may go Bucharest - Olt River Defile - Sibiu - Sighisoara - Maramures - Bukovina - Neamt county (the county to the south of Bukovina) and return to Transylvania by Bicaz Pass (amazing canyon), Harghita and Covasna counties and only then to Brasov, as the road from northern Moldavia (Bukovina) to Bucharest is pretty dull and going on the same way twice (I mean Bucharest - Brasov) is also boring. Anyway, the road is long and there are many other interesting cities along, as Cluj-Napoca, the capital of Transylvania.

There is also the variant to return from Sighisoara through Agnita and then by Transfagarasan, a mountain road that was named by Top Gear "the best road in the world" (see Wikipedia or Youtube videos).

2. Sighisoara has a nice natural scenery but is a small town. Sibiu is large (I mean the historical part), has many museums, etc but is located in a flat area and surrounded by neighbourhoods of commieblocks. Both are filled with Romanian and foreign tourists almost all the time. I would chose Sighisoara, as I'm a nature lover.

3. Baia Mare is a nice medieval city but is not in the historical region of Maramures, although it was made its county capital during Communism. I think that is more interesting to sleep in a village than in Baia Mare, which is an industrial city. Maramures villages are placed in very picturesque mountain landscapes, but there are not hotels, only pensions. If you want to stay at hotel, Borsa is a great mountain resort but is at distance from other objectives (on the pass to Bukovina). Chose a village on Iza valley, like Ieud, Rozavlea or Bârsana, who are knwon for their traditions and Unesco Heritage wooden churches.

4. By car is far better as you can stop where you want and don't have to wait hours for the train and by car is more scenic too.

5. There is not any danger, but you should pay attention to swindlers, especially in Bucharest. Ask the taxi drivers the price (most of the cars take 1,39 Leu/km but there are some more expensive). Also there is not any problem concerning racial issues.
