Hi
We are 2-3 Indian PhD students in the U.S planning a 5-6 day trip in Romania after attending a conference in Istanbul. Our main interest is to explore a medieval town or two in the heart of the transylvannian forest and spend a couple of days in a rural village in the carpathians. We have come up with this itinerary and would appreciate your suggestions on whether it can work/is practical (since we've never travelled in easter europe before)...and if you have any better suggestion/alternative:-
day 1 & 2- go straight to Brasov (via Bucharest) from Istanbul by train and spend the two days in the town/surroundings
day 3- go to Sibiu/Sighiosara from Brasov by train, spend the night there
day 4 & 5- take the train to Baia Mare, spend these 2 days in the maramures and see a painted monastery in Bucovina
day 6- return to bucharest, stay overnight
day 7- fly back
1. any suggestions? improvements?
2. Sibiu or sighiosara?
3. which village should we use as base in maramures? baia mare or another?
4. is this all doable/recommended by train? or would we be better of looking for a driver/guide who can drive us around (we know only elementary german)? are the journeys more scenic by train or by road???
5. what is the safety/crime situation like? we are Indians, so is there any concern about ethnic/racial trouble?
would be grateful for your help!
thanks/regards
Andrews
