8 days through Transylvania, car or train? Route?

Hi,

We are traveling through Romania and would love some advice. We will arrive in Bucharest on May 22 and will try and rent an apartment until the 24th. On the 24th, we will head to either Bucovina, Maramures, or Transylvania. We will need to end up in Budapest on June 2nd.

I am thinking we may want to head north from Bucharest to see the painted monasteries, then south and east through Transylvania, ending the trip in Timisoara and taking a train from there to Budapest.

1) Do you have advice on itineraries/routes from Bucharest to Budapest that would capitalize on our 8 days?

2) Do you have the names or emails of guesthouses or budget lodgings in these areas?

3) Should we rent a car if we want to see villages and towns or is taking a train more sane? It seems we could rent a car in Bucharest and then return it in Timisoara, but I am having trouble determining whether there a

1) Here are some suggestions for an itinerary:

-travel by night train from Bucharest to Suceava (main city in the Bucovina region), rent a car there, spend 1-2 days visiting the monasteries and another 1-2 days across the mountains in Maramures, return the car to Suceava (or, if possible, in one of the larger cities in Maramures, like Baia Mare);

-go by train to Brasov and start visiting the sites in southern Transylvania (2-4 days: about one day each for the main historical cities, Brasov and Sibiu and the rest for side trips to the nearby castles, churches etc.); this part you can do using local transportation, you don't necessarily need to rent a car;

-travel by train to Timisoara, visit it and catch a train to Budapest;

You could also end the trip in Cluj-Napoca instead of Timisoara and fly from there to Budapest with a low cost airline, it's probably cheaper than a train.

2) There are hundreds (or more) of guesthouses in those areas.

To get an idea you can check the site below, belonging to a national rural tourism association, they have (incomplete) lists of guesthouses for every county. Look into the Suceava (SV on their map), Maramures (MM), Brasov (BV) and Sibiu (SB) counties.

3) As a general idea it's probably best to combine them: travel by train over long distances and by car for short local trips.

But, like I've said, just for the Bucovina and Maramures regions it's better to rent a car, the rest can be done by train/bus.

Thanks for this response; I really appreciate it. Will renting a car in Bucovina be difficult?

I would also like to do a hike or two in the mountains, if you have suggestions.

It shouldn't be too difficult to rent a car in Bucovina, it's increasingly becoming a popular destination (here are a few rental companies operating there :

For the hiking part there are many places, it all depends on the degree of difficulty you're looking for: the Bucegi mountains (just one hour south of Brasov/ or two hours north of Bucharest, if you want to do this first) are the most popular hiking spot, the Fagaras mountains near Sibiu are the most difficult (also the most spectacular), but you can find good places to hike in Maramures' mountains too.
