Hi. Here are some places you could go to::

Day 1: Hunyad castle in Hunedoara (catch a bus from Sibiu to Deva, 2 1/2 - 3 hours away, then a local bus to Hunedoara)

Day 2: the medieval monasteries in the mountains south of Sibiu along the Olt river: Cozia, Turnu, Cornetu (under 2 hours away; get a bus or train towards Ramnicu Valcea, they pass by them)

Day 3: villages in the Marginimea Sibiului area, especially the ones further into the mountains like Poiana Sibiului ( ~1 1/2 hours by bus from Sibiu)

Day 4: some old German villages with fortified churches like Biertan (~2 hours away by bus, although you might have to pass through Medias again) or Calnic (~1 1/2 hours by bus)

There's no public transport all the way to Poienari fortress.

If you want to get there without a car you can take a bus from Sibiu to Ramnicu Valcea or preferably Pitesti, then a minibus to Curtea de Arges, another minibus to Capataneni, walk for about one hour north along the Transfagarasan road and finally climb to the top of the (steep) hill where the fortress is.

You could combine it with Calnic (train Sibiu-Sebes, visit Sebes in the morning then catch a bus to Calnic for the afternoon).

I hope you don't mind if I ask a question, D0nna1967. Is a day trip to Sarmisegetuza Regia possible from Sibiu with either a rental car or a hired car and driver?

Yes, Sarmizegetusa Regia can be done as a day trip by car; driving to it from Sibiu takes about 3 hours. It's preferable (but not absolutely necessary) that you get a car with high ground clearance and all wheel drive.

Hi, it's me again. Do you know how to get to Calnic Fortress if we are at the Alba Iulia train station or bus station? I can't find it in the internet.

Thank you so much.

Catch a bus or train from Alba Iulia to Sebes then a bus from Sebes to Calnic.

Alba Iulia-Sebes bus schedules are available here:

autogari.ro/Transport/…

When you search train timetables on the CFR site write "Sebes Alba" for Sebes.

Approximate Sebes-Calnic bus schedules can be found here:
